There comes a point when being a redhead stops feeling like the thing that made you different and starts feeling like the thing you were never supposed to apologize for.

A lot of us learned early that red hair gets attention whether we want it or not. People stare. They comment. They invent nicknames. They ask questions. And plenty of redheads spend part of childhood wishing they could simply blend in.

Then something changes. The hair you once tried to make less noticeable becomes the hair you refuse to hide. The freckles stop being something to cover. The pale skin stops being something that needs explaining. You realize different was never the insult people thought it was.

And embracing the fire doesnโ€™t have to mean embracing every tired stereotype about redheaded tempers. The fire can be confidence. Resilience. Humor. Stubborn survival. The willingness to walk into a room knowing youโ€™ll be noticed and deciding thatโ€™s perfectly fine.

I think thatโ€™s one of the quiet privileges of getting older. Eventually you stop asking whether other people approve of the things about you that were never theirs to approve in the first place.

๐Ÿ”ฅ You were born a redhead, sweetheart. Youโ€™ve already spent enough time explaining the color, defending the freckles, dodging the jokes, and answering whether itโ€™s natural. At some point, you stop trying to extinguish what makes you visible and simply embrace the fire. Some things were never meant to fade quietly.

Iโ€™d be an absolutely terrible superhero, and Iโ€™m okay with admitting that.

The signal could be lighting up the entire sky and Iโ€™d be sitting at home thinking, โ€œWow. That looks serious. I hope somebody handles that.โ€

Itโ€™s not that I donโ€™t care. I just feel there should be reasonable working hours for heroism. Villains need to understand that anything happening after 8 p.m. is tomorrowโ€™s emergency.

And if Iโ€™ve already changed into pajamas, civilization is really taking its chances. Once the bra comes off, my jurisdiction ends at the property line.

Besides, superheroes are always getting interrupted. Dinner gets cold. Dates get abandoned. Vacations get cancelled. Nobody ever gets to finish a movie. Frankly, saving the world seems to have terrible benefits.

๐Ÿฆธ So shine the signal all you want. If my curtains are closed, I didnโ€™t see it. And if I didnโ€™t see it, legally speaking, somebody else is probably wearing the cape tonight. Sometimes the greatest power is selective visibility.

There are days when a weekend simply isnโ€™t going to cover it. I need enough time off to forget my passwords, lose track of what day it is, and stop recognizing the notification sound from my email.

A normal vacation barely gets started before youโ€™re counting backward. Day one is recovering from getting there. Day two is finally relaxing. Day three is realizing you have to leave soon. That is not a vacation. That is relaxation with a deadline.

Six months seems much more reasonable. Somewhere around month three, I imagine Iโ€™d finally stop waking up thinking there was something I was supposed to be doing.

Of course, the problem with taking six months off is that apparently landlords, mortgage companies, utilities, and grocery stores have refused to participate in my wellness journey.

So I continue doing what adults everywhere do. I take an afternoon off, call it โ€œself-care,โ€ and spend half of it doing laundry because apparently clean underwear remains essential even during emotional recovery.

๐Ÿ๏ธ What I really need is a six-month vacation twice a year. Iโ€™ve checked the math carefully, and the only flaw in this plan is employment. Apparently my work-life balance is currently all work and no balance due.

Starved of Rome: The Last Days of Agrippina

On October 18, AD 33, Agrippina the Elder died in exile on Pandateria after one of the most brutal reversals of fortune in Romeโ€™s imperial family. She was Augustusโ€™s granddaughter and the widow of the enormously popular Germanicus, whose ashes she had personally carried home after his mysterious death in AD 19. Once surrounded by crowds of supporters, Agrippina eventually found herself declared an enemy of the state and banished to a tiny island.

Her sons Nero and Drusus had once stood among the possible successors to Tiberius, but imperial politics destroyed them. Nero died in exile, while Drusus was imprisoned on the Palatine and reportedly starved until he was reduced to chewing the stuffing of his bed. Agrippina followed them in AD 33, traditionally said to have starved herself, although Tacitus claimed food was deliberately withheld so her death would appear to be su***de. The precise truth of her final days remains impossible to establish.

Many of the hats I wear in the podcast come from my own collection, and quite a few eventually make their way into my Etsy shop, Detailed Pieces, along with other authentic vintage pieces and wearable history. The particular hat you see may still be available, or you may find something completely different with a history of its own.

Bills are remarkably dependable. Jobs change, plans fall apart, appliances die, and somebody somewhere will disappoint you, but the electric company never forgets you exist.

There is something almost impressive about the consistency. Every month, right on schedule, another little reminder arrives that apparently continuing to live indoors is a subscription service.

And bills have impeccable timing. The moment you think, โ€œI actually have a little extra money this month,โ€ the car develops a noise, the insurance renews, or something in the house suddenly requires $600 worth of attention.

I remember being younger and thinking adulthood meant financial freedom. Technically it does. Iโ€™m completely free to decide which company gets my money first.

Coffee, at least, understands the arrangement. I give it a few dollars and it gives me enough energy to open the envelopes containing requests for considerably more dollars.

โ˜• So I like my coffee the way I like my bills: consistent. Unfortunately, only one of them makes me feel better afterward. The other just keeps reminding me that adulthood always comes due.

Co**se on the Gallows: Signed, Sealed, Executed Regicides

In October 1660, England was confronting the consequences of something almost unimaginable. Eleven years earlier, Charles I had been tried and executed, but now his son Charles II occupied the restored throne, and surviving men responsible for the king's death were being prosecuted for high treason.

Charles I's death warrant carried 59 signatures, leaving the restored government an unusually direct record of who had formally authorized the ex*****on. Ten men connected directly with the trial and death were ultimately executed in October 1660, although they were killed across several days and not all of them had actually signed the warrant.

Special note: If you're watching the video version and wondering about the vintage hat I'm wearing, many of the hats featured on History Happens eventually make their way into my Etsy shop. The exact one in this episode may still be available, or it may already have found a new home, but there are usually other true-vintage pieces waiting there. Take a look at the shop and see what's currently available:
