! What an incredible pop-up clinic in Denver last weekend! 💙

Our VHI team returned to downtown Denver to provide free vision care for underserved community members in partnership with Stout Street Community Clinic and the Colorado Coalition for the Homeless. Working together to identify and schedule patients in advance helped ensure access to care for those who need it most.

This year’s clinic resulted in 176 comprehensive eye exams and the fitting of 157 pairs of prescription glasses and sunglasses, along with 50 pairs of reading glasses—each one helping restore clarity, independence, and quality of life. We are deeply grateful to our local partners and volunteer teams who made this impact possible.

Volunteer with VHI this August 5-9 in Browning, Montana! 👓

VHI is partnering with the Southern Peigan Health Center to provide comprehensive eye exams and prescription eyeglasses to members of the Blackfeet Nation, including student athletes, tribal elders, and clinic patients.

Located in northwest Montana, the Blackfeet Reservation is a rural region where access to specialty vision care can be limited. Together, we can help expand access to essential eye care services and support healthier communities.

We are currently recruiting volunteer ophthalmologists, optometrists, opticians, ophthalmic technicians, and general support volunteers to join this impactful program.

June is Cataract Awareness Month. 👁️

Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness worldwide, yet cataract surgery is a safe, effective procedure that can restore sight and transform lives. Through our international programs, VHI volunteers provide sight-restoring surgeries, train local eye care professionals, and strengthen local capacity to deliver care year-round.

Every surgery helps a patient regain independence, opportunity, and quality of life. This month, we celebrate the power of sight restoration and the volunteers, partners, and supporters who make it possible.

On June 6, VHI volunteers will return to downtown Denver to provide free vision care for underserved community members in partnership with Stout Street Eye Clinic and the Colorado Coalition for the Homeless.

Together, we work to identify and schedule patients ahead of the clinic day—helping ensure individuals in need can access comprehensive eye care and sight-restoring services. Our goal this year is to provide 200 eye exams for patients who may otherwise go without care.

We are still recruiting volunteers to join the effort, including ophthalmologists, optometrists, opticians, ophthalmic technicians, translators, and general support volunteers to assist with social media, patient flow, and data collection.

We are grateful for the strong local partnerships and dedicated volunteers who make this work possible. 💙

! What an incredible week in Honduras 🇭🇳

Over the course of this field program, three full teams worked side by side to expand access to vision care in rural communities:

👁️ A field team traveled to local communities providing comprehensive eye exams and fittings for prescription glasses

🔧 An optical team established a new optical lab and trained local staff to fabricate glasses onsite

🏥 A surgical team operated in two ORs all week, providing strabismus, oculoplastic, and laser procedures under general anesthesia

Together, the impact was extraordinary:
• 486 eye exams completed
• 224 custom prescription eyeglasses provided
• 67 surgeries and procedures performed
 • 19 strabismus surgeries
 • 27 oculoplastic and other procedures
 • 21 YAG/SLT laser procedures
• 3 local staff members trained in optical fabrication

One of the most exciting milestones of the week: for the FIRST TIME EVER, prescription eyeglasses were fabricated onsite by newly trained local staff using the new optical lab equipment. This is the kind of sustainable, long-term impact that changes access to care for entire communities.

Thank you to every volunteer, partner, donor, and local team member who made this work possible. The impact of this week will continue long after our team has returned home.

Behind the scenes in Honduras 🇭🇳 The days are long, the clinic is full, and the work is deeply meaningful.

Our team is screening patients for this weekend’s surgical program, with more than 60 strabismus and pediatric patients and 40 oculoplastics patients already evaluated. Every screening represents someone waiting for care, answers, and the chance for improved vision and quality of life.

Between surgeries, screenings, optical lab setup, and training local providers, this week has been nonstop—and we’re grateful to every partner, volunteer, and supporter helping make it possible.

The optical lab setup is in full swing—and we’re already training the next generation of providers 🙌 Paola and Karina, local optometry students, along with Edward from the clinic team, are getting hands-on experience as we bring this lab to life.

This is what sustainable impact looks like—investing in people, skills, and systems that will expand access to vision care long after this week ends.

The VHI team has officially arrived in Honduras 🇭🇳 and day one is already full of momentum. Our field team is preparing to travel to outlying villages to provide eye exams and eyeglasses—many of which will be made locally in Manos Amigas’ new optical lab we’re helping to set up this week.

This week, we’re also supporting up to 80 strabismus and oculoplastic surgeries for patients in rural communities, while working alongside partners to establish a permanent, fully equipped optical lab.

Access to vision care doesn’t happen by chance—it’s built, together. More updates to come this week!

! Last weekend, our team implemented a very successful free pop-up clinic in Grand Junction, CO! We provided comprehensive eye exams and prescription glasses for underserved, under-insured patients in the community. What an incredible day serving the Grand Junction community! The team provided free eye care services to 213 patients, while dispensing 143 pairs of prescription glasses and 150 readers and sunglasses to those in need.

But beyond the numbers are the stories that remind us why this work matters. 💙

One man in his 50s came in believing his eyesight was simply “getting bad.” Instead, our team identified significant diabetic eye disease that had gone undiagnosed. Without insurance and unable to afford care, he had delayed treatment. Through the clinic, he was connected with resources for both his systemic health and follow-up vision care.

Another patient in his 20s arrived wearing glasses he had created himself—taping together two old pairs to make something functional. With a prescription of -17.00, access to proper eyewear is life-changing. He will now receive a complete new pair of glasses.

We also screened many patients with family histories of glaucoma who had never been formally evaluated, and identified several individuals needing continued care for potentially sight-threatening conditions.

Perhaps most telling: 60% of attendees had never been to one of our clinics before. Patients traveled from as far as two hours away, showing the continued and growing need for accessible vision care in Western Colorado.
