AFT Colorado

AFT Colorado AFT Colorado was organized as the Colorado Federation of Teachers, and was chartered October 26, 1946.

In the early years there was no collective bargaining for Colorado teachers, but the CFT was effective in gaining improved working conditions for teachers and better learning conditions for students. Along with the Denver Federation of Teachers, CFT proposed statewide tenure laws, teacher certification standards, school district reorganization, and improved school financing.

As we get closer to a hearing in the Colorado House of Representatives after successful passage in the Senate, we are hopeful of this legislative effort leading to a spotlight being turned on the difficult and exploitative conditions under which adjunct faculty serve our students and their communities!

We thank Kolker for Colorado for his statement in support of Colorado adjunct professors at the Senate Education Committee hearing on Wednesday, February 8.

Thank you to Janice Marchman for Colorado, Senator Julie Gonzales, and Colorado Representative Mary Young, HD 50 for their work on SB23-084, which has passed the third hearing and is moving to the House! Learn more here: https://bit.ly/SupportSB23-084

A provost-backed plan would have reduced the number of classes professors taught each semester, giving them more time for research obligations and student support.

Dr. Mary Van Buren, President of Our AAUP CSU Ft.Collins Chapter on the finalist for President of CSU Ft. Collins.

“I think many people across the university are concerned about her lack of academic background,” said council member Mary Van Buren, a professor of anthropology. “She has experience as a lawyer, policing the university. She has experience as an administrator, and she has experience as an entrepreneur.”

Van Buren went on to note that Parsons’ six-page cover letter to the Board of Governors, outlining her interest and qualifications for the job, barely mentioned the word “faculty.”

“And I find that very concerning,” she said.
