The 2008 financial crisis, whose negative effects are still being felt, especially in Europe, had its origins in a major speculative bubble in the U.S. housing market, fueled by the excessively risk-inclined behavior of many financial institutions, both inside and outside the U.S. That financial cri…

Communicating climate science to the media and public

This event, sponsored by the AMS, took place at lunchtime on Wednesday of the WCRP Open Science Conference. A panel of professional experts in communicating science presented their views and advice, followed by a question and answer period. There was a very good turn out, an estimated 150 early career scientists attended... read more

WCRP to launch a Global Drought Information System.
2011 has seen devastating droughts in Africa and SW USA causing famine, wildfires and economic losses. Can we do better at providing early warnings so that farmers, aid agencies and global markets can take preparedness action? The World Climate Research Programme believes so. WCRP is launching a major new initiative to develop a “Global Drought Information System”. This system would provide a user anywhere in the world access to information on current scientific understanding of drought and the history of drought in that region, current conditions, causes of those conditions and forecasts. Watch WCRP’s website for more…

An emerging theme from the World Climate Research Program Open Science Conference ( ): The need for actionable science. Decision-makers – including water providers, farmers, insurance companies, oil exploration companies and many more – need climate and other scientific information to guide decisions. But there is often a mismatch between the scientific data available and the information these companies need. WCRP’s panel on private sector climate science and service needs, company executives and scientists discussed how to work together to produce actionable information.

How is the WCRP OSC being received by the students and early career scientists? The organizing committee would love to hear some feedback and motivate discussions and participations of young scientists during the conference Q&A sessions. Do leave comments below if you liked the conference and the key points you will take back home from this conference.
