What would you tell your first-year self? πŸ’

For Geneva, a Cal Poly SLO grad from 2023, it comes down to two things:

1️⃣ Make time for what you love outside of work. If you've moved to a new city, join a soccer team, find a hiking group, or get involved with your local EWB-USA professional chapter. Some of your best friendships could start there.

2️⃣ Find a good mentor. Geneva's old boss is still her mentor, even after she left that company, and he's helped her through each step of her career.

Geneva has gone from student chapter member to published researcher to Portland Professional Chapter volunteer. Today she's EWB-USA's Student Representative to the Board of Directors and is working on her Master's at CU Boulder's Mortenson Center in Global Engineering & Resilience. 🌍

Want another way to grow your network and career? Join our free, virtual Career Connections series every Thursday at 4pm MT this fall. It's open to all EWB-USA volunteers.

Our interns gave last year's conference attendees a tiny mic, and they had big reasons to come back. 🎀

The 2027 EWB-USA National Conference comes to St. Louis March 4–6, and this year we're celebrating 25 years of impact. Every chapter should plan to send at least one representative.

Get your chapter ready with our Why Attend resources, including tools for requesting university or employer funding:

We're heading to WEFTEC 2026 in New Orleans, September 28–30 β€” and we couldn't be more excited.

WEFTEC brings together more than 23,000 water professionals for cutting-edge solutions, hands-on learning, and a global network working toward the same goal: a more water-secure world. That's exactly the kind of connection and collaboration EWB-USA's work depends on, too.

We’ll be located in the Exhibition Hall at Charity of Choice Booth #6722 Water Environment Federation (WEF)

Come find us β€” we'd love to connect. See you in New Orleans! Register at https://registration.experientevent.com/ShowWEF261

The next Career Connections session tackles the question we know a lot of you have been asking: what does AI actually mean for your engineering career?

Join us Thursday, September 24 at 4:00 PM MT for AI in Practice: How VHB Is Adopting, Governing, and Living With It, with Bill Ashworth, PE, ENV SP, President & CEO of VHB.

This isn't a generic AI talk β€” expect a candid look at:
πŸ”Ή Where AI has genuinely boosted productivity at VHB, and where it's fallen short
πŸ”Ή The real guardrails engineers follow when AI touches licensed, client-facing work
πŸ”Ή How AI is reshaping the entry-level path, and what to start building now

Free. Virtual. Open to all EWB-USA volunteers β€” bring your questions. Register now πŸ”—https://ewb-usa-org.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_sc_58ApeSaSX4x0aRd-ZvQ #/registration

We're so grateful that the Water Environment Federation (WEF) named EWB-USA a 2026 Charity of Choice.

WEF's mission is to inspire the water community in pursuit of human and environmental well-being. At EWB-USA, nearly 70% of our programming is built around water: from drinking water and handwashing to sanitation and irrigation. To date, we've helped more than 3.7 Million people gain improved access to clean water and sanitation, working side-by-side with communities to build solutions that last.

Different organizations, same driving belief: water access changes lives, and it takes a connected community of engineers, professionals, and advocates to get there. That's our "why" for this partnership.

Connect with us at WEFTEC26 in New Orleans later this month, at Exhibition Booth #6722 WEFTEC

Meet Mark Behrend: a mechanical engineering graduate of Rochester Institute of Technology, a Master of Development Engineering grad from UC Berkeley (where he also interned with EWB-USA), and now a Project Officer, Global Partnership Coordinator, and Research Associate with EWB-Nepal in Kathmandu.

His advice to his freshman self: find balance. Class and homework matter, but so do the nights out with friends, the late walks around campus, and the activities you're passionate about, the ones you'll still want to be doing after you graduate.

That same idea of balance applies to your career path too. If you're looking for a low-pressure way to start exploring what's next, our Career Connections series is a great place to begin.

Big news: EWB-USA has been named a 2026 Charity of Choice by the Water Environment Federation!

Water access is at the heart of what we do β€” and partners like WEF help us reach more communities with lasting, community-led solutions.

Thank you, WEF, for this recognition and support. πŸ’™

You already know when something's wrong. The water looks off. That same pothole's been there for years. So why doesn't it just get fixed?

Turns out there's often funding available to help. The hard part is navigating it, especially for small communities without an engineer to help make the case.

In part two of our video series, Brooke Poppe from our U.S. Community Program breaks down why this gap sticks around, and what actually helps close it. Missed part one? Catch up, and stay tuned for part three.
