When we discuss refined handling methods with individuals and institutions, we often hear concerns that using a tunnel or cupped hands to pick up mice will take too much time.
But not to worry! Once staff and the mice are trained, tunnel handling and cupping take no longer than tail handling! (see: https://www.na3rsc.org/refined-mouse-handling-overview/)
In our recent survey on refined handling perspectives, over 60% of respondents stated that both cage change and handling time either stayed the same or decreased after switching to refined handling methods.
We have recently added this information to its own page on our website, and our Refined Handling Hub Overview page! This will make it even easier and more accessible for you, or others within your institution who may have this concern, to find this helpful information.
