The Sarara Foundation

The Sarara Foundation The Sarara Foundation supports Indigenous-led conservation with Reteti Elephant Sanctuary, nomadic education, & healthcare programs.

Together, we protect wildlife, empower communities, & set a new standard for conservation for future generations. 🌿 As an indigenous community in Northern Kenya, we are the custodians of some of the largest remaining wilderness left in Africa, including many key endangered species. We have a 20 year vision for creating sustainability within our community where we:

- thrive alongside wildlife
- ar

e supported by a robust, poverty-free local economy
- have the tools and systems to manage and mitigate climate change

For The Sarara Foundation’s vision to be fully realised, we believe that we must execute our work over a full 20 year generation cycle. Through this model, we hope to develop an open source blueprint for community conservation around the world.

Once upon a time, there was… Montessori School Stories ✨📚

Welcome to our new series where we will be sharing stories from The ’s Nomadic Montessori Schools - stories of learning, resilience, community, and the incredible children and teachers who make these schools so special.

In our first chapter, Teacher Judy Mugambi - Head of the Nomadic Education Program - shares a story from Lowai Obo that speaks to the deep trust and belief children and families have in our schools, and the importance of creating pathways for children to continue learning close to home.

It is also a story that honours the teachers who bring learning to life in the heart of Namunyak - nurturing curiosity, building confidence, and planting the seeds of knowledge and imagination.

As our schools continue to grow, so does the dream of creating spaces where children can continue learning and exploring while staying connected to their culture and way of life.

Join us in bringing learning closer to home 💚 sarara.co/nomadic-education (link in bio)

Happy International Day for Biological Diversity 🐘🦒🦓🐆🌿🦅

Today, we celebrate the wild, wonderful biodiversity that makes our home planet so magical - and the people working every day to protect it.

In Namunyak Community Conservancy, elephants roam through the Mathews Mountains, reticulated giraffes stretch toward the treetops, Grévy’s zebra gallop across the plains, and cheetahs, lions, hornbills, ground squirrels, grasses, wildflowers, insects, and countless other species all help keep this ecosystem flourishing. 🌍

At the heart of it all are the Indigenous Samburu people, who have lived alongside wildlife for generations, caring for this landscape through deep knowledge, coexistence, and compassion.

Together, The , , , and the Samburu community are working hand in hand to protect biodiversity - rescuing and releasing orphaned wildlife, restoring rangelands and migratory corridors, supporting ranger teams, strengthening livelihoods through community-led initiatives, and helping shape a future where people and wildlife thrive side by side.

On this day - and every day - we honour the beauty, interconnectedness, and resilience of the natural world - and the people keeping its wonder alive ✨

Become part of this community-led conservation journey and join us in safeguarding a thriving diversity of life. Learn more at sarara.co/foundation (link in bio) 🫶🏽

What was once bare, dry, degraded land at the Lbaa restoration site in Namunyak Conservancy is now bursting with life. The semi-circular bunds once clearly visible across the landscape are now hidden beneath tall, healthy grasses - a powerful sign that restoration truly works. 🌱✨

The Lbaa restoration site is a community-led rangeland restoration area, where Samburu Milk Mamas and Eco Rangers are working together to heal land damaged by overgrazing, erosion, and prolonged drought. Through carefully dug semi-circular bunds designed to capture rainwater and slow runoff, the soil is able to hold moisture again - creating the conditions for grasses and native vegetation to return and thrive.

Behind every patch of green is the hard work, knowledge, and care of the Milk Mamas. Through The ’s Milk to Market program, these women are not only nourishing ’s elephant orphans with locally sourced goat milk, but also supporting their families with reliable income while restoring and protecting the rangelands their livestock, wildlife, and communities depend on.

What is growing here is more than grass. It is resilience, hope, and a healthier future for both people and nature.

And this is only the beginning. With every rainy season, the land grows stronger, healthier, and greener. Become part of this community-led conservation journey at sarara.co/foundation (link in bio) 🌿

Today, on Endangered Species Day, we celebrate three extraordinary species that call Northern Kenya home: the reticulated giraffe, Grévy’s zebra, and African bush elephant. 🦒🦓🐘

Each plays a vital role in keeping these ecosystems healthy – from elephants shaping landscapes and dispersing seeds, to giraffes and zebras helping maintain the balance of the savannah.

Yet all three face growing threats from habitat loss, climate pressure, drought, land degradation, and human-wildlife conflict.

Across Namunyak Conservancy and the Mathews Range ecosystem, The , , , and the Samburu community are working together to protect endangered wildlife through community-led conservation rooted in Indigenous knowledge, coexistence, and care for the land. 🌿

From rangeland restoration and safeguarding migratory corridors, to rescue, rehabilitation, and rewilding at Reteti, this work is about building a future where both people and wildlife can thrive together.

Because protecting endangered species means strengthening an entire living ecosystem – and the communities who call it home. 🌍

Join us in safeguarding and celebrating the extraordinary wildlife of Northern Kenya and the people working tirelessly to protect it. sarara.co/foundation (link in bio)

Today, on International Nurses Day, we honour two extraordinary women at the heart of The Sarara Foundation’s Nomadic Healthcare Program – Nurses Dorcas and Dominica ✨

Across the landscapes of Namunyak Conservancy, they travel from manyatta to manyatta bringing life-saving care to mothers, babies, children, and families in remote communities where healthcare is often difficult to access.

Their work goes far beyond treatment. They comfort, educate, listen, and help families feel seen, supported, and safe. Through their dedication, strength, and kindness, they are changing lives every single day.

Today, we celebrate Dorcas and Dominica – and thank them for their compassion, resilience, and care, which are helping build healthier, stronger communities across the conservancy, one mother, one child, one family at a time.

This event brought together such a caring and passionate community united by a shared love for elephants, wildlife, and Indigenous-led conservation.

Most of all, we would like to extend an elephant-sized thank you to Chrissie Moran and Jennifer Kotylo. School is back in session in Namunyak ✨📚🌿

Across the conservancy, our Nomadic Montessori classrooms are once again filled with curiosity, creativity, and imagination.

Education changes everything. Since 2019, our Nomadic Montessori schools have given over 1,000 Samburu children their very first access to education close to home – delivered in mobile classrooms designed for pastoralist life, and shaped by a vision to create a school system that celebrates the Samburu’s Indigenous culture while honouring the landscape and biodiversity that sustain it.

The Samburu have cared for one of Africa’s last great wilderness areas and its endangered species for generations. By supporting the education of their children, we help ensure this legacy continues long into the future.

Here’s to a new school term filled with discovery, adventure, and wonder. ✨

This Earth Day, we are reflecting on a year of impact for people and planet 🌍

Our 2025 Impact Report is a reminder of what’s possible when conservation is led by community, rooted in Indigenous knowledge, and shaped by care for both people and wildlife.

From baby elephants rescued and reunited with their herds, to women building financial independence, to landscapes restored and families supported with education and healthcare – every part of this work is connected, strengthening the whole. This is how we care for the Earth, every day at The Sarara Foundation.

Swipe through to see what your support made possible this past year, and explore the full report via the link in our bio.
