Continuing in the spirit of supporting youth, Denton Lions Club has partnered with the Orioles Advocates as they promote and stimulate interest in baseball and softball.

Please stop by the Lions Club Summerfest booth to donate equipment your player has outgrown. Feel free to reach out before Summerfest to drop off your donations.

Both Denton Little League and Caroline Softball host some of their home games at Lions Club Park.

Great gathering for our final meeting before summer break. Meetings will resume in September when the new school year begins. Service opportunities will continue through the summer and will be announced by email and posted to our page.

A memory from a year ago. Today, we wish Mr. D**k Scurto a very happy 86th birthday!

On Sunday, May 25th, I was able to spend a few minutes with Conrad Vincent Scurto, a.k.a. Mr. D**k. After his full and tiring day at the Ridgely Strawberry Festival, we met briefly at Lions Club Park.

Many, many years ago, the two baseball fields at Lions Club Park were dedicated to two gentlemen for their tireless efforts with local Denton youth. On September 22, 1984, the front field was dedicated to Edgar Lee Todd, Jr. and became known as the Tinker Todd Field. On September 14, 1988, the back field was dedicated to Conrad Vincent Scurto. Sadly, the plaque at the back field was damaged, as was the masonry column it was mounted on.

Many thanks to Matt Hannawald for repairing the brick column and mounting the new plaque. Grateful for Randolph Moore who helped get the new plaque.

Lockerman Middle School student, Patrick Cesarini, and friend, Ethan Campbell, recently spent time helping members of the Lions Club on their May 10th clean up day. The boys, working side by side with Mr. D**k, know the sentiment on the 1988 plaque remains true today as “the desire to teach the youth of this community the fundamentals of life both on and off the field”.

Mr. D**k always seemed to prefer to do things without a lot of fuss and fanfare. In honor of his 85th birthday, his field was quietly and unceremoniously rededicated to his 25 years of service to Denton Little League.

From front porches to cemeteries, veterans’ memorials to parks, town greens to quiet places of reflection — America will pause together for the National Moment of Remembrance as the sound of Taps rises from coast to coast.

As America approaches its 250th anniversary, we remember that our freedom was secured by generations who served — and by those who never came home.

Taps Across America is our opportunity to honor them.

Tonight, the Denton Lions Club was represented by Lion David Irby at the North Caroline High School Senior Scholarship Night. He presented scholarships to three seniors in the Class of 2026.

Lion Wayne Wiley played Taps as he closed out an outstanding presentation on The Story of Taps.

Along with many others on Memorial Day at 3:00 p.m., he’ll join in a national tribute to our fallen heroes.
