KUZU KUZU 92.9FM is Denton's Non Profit LPFM Community Radio Station. We see KUZU as a public forum for artistic expression, music, debate, and local affairs.

The second half of the twentieth century saw the increasing deregulation of radio, which led to the growth of radio conglomerates across the nation. In response to the disappearance of local voice, grassroots organizations lobbied for communities to gain access to local airwaves. Their decades-long effort led the federal government to create a new class of radio stations called LPFMs, signed into

law in 2010. With a cap of 100 watts, Low Power FM stations have a radius of three miles, perfect for a small town like Denton. In 2013, the FCC accepted applications for new LPFMs, a rare opportunity unlikely to happen again. After two years of hard work, we were granted permission by the FCC to take on KUZU 92.9FM, set to launch in 2017. With the help and support of the community at large, we hope to make KUZU Denton’s own radio station for generations to come.

The Grassroots Radio Conference salutes the Prometheus Radio Project, without who many of us would not be here. Prometheus is a non-profit organization founded by a small group of radio activists in 1998, who build, support, and advocate for community radio stations that bring together and empower local, participatory voices and movements for social change. To that end, the Prometheus Radio Project works to demystify technology, the political processes that govern access to our media system, and the impact media has on our lives and communities.

Their primary focus is on building a large community of LPFM stations and listeners, believing this community can grow into a powerful force working toward the democratic media future they envision. The Prometheus Radio Project supports community groups at every stage of building their stations, facilitating public participation in the FCC regulatory process, and sponsoring events that promote awareness and support for media democracy and LPFM radio.
