Denton Neighborhood Alliance Working together for neighborhood preservation

The Denton Neighborhood Alliance recognizes that the neighborhood is the basic building block of the community. With rapid growth, new pressures are put on residential neighborhoods that have the potential to erode the character of established neighborhoods. Goals of the Denton Neighborhood Alliance:
- To serve as a voice for neighborhoods at the city level in a manner similar to the Chamber

of Commerce in regard to business issues
- To provide a regular meeting opportunity for citizens to address questions to city officials
- To work with the City of Denton to conduct training on issues and organize meetings on topics of concern
- To promote the creation of neighborhood groups/associations and assist in the development process of new neighborhood organizations
- To share creative ideas for involving neighbors and maintaining neighborhood groups and associations

Hey Neighbors! Here's a shout out to Township II. Are you still out there? I seem to remember you folks had a thriving Neighborhood Watch group many years ago. I heard about a neighborhood that would like to set one up and am wondering if you'd like to help them out with advice. When the new year rolls around they're planning to meet with someone from the Police Department but I thought a neighborhood with experience would be a boost. Or anyone else out there with an active Neighborhood Watch? Post here!

Greetings Denton Neighborhoods! This group (Stronger Denton) is an interesting discussion group formed around Charles Marohn's book, Strong Towns. It's about how to make planning decisions that make cities more resilient and adaptable to new conditions. Some of the recommendations are pretty scary for older neighborhoods. For instance, it's very anti single-family development (in certain circumstances). Those of you who remember our old battles against multi family apartment complexes will automatically bristle at some of these ideas. But I encourage you to read the book and start some thinking about affordable housing and homelessness solutions in Denton. I'm not saying I'm wholeheartedly in favor of Marohn's ideas; just that Strong Towns is a good way to start difficult conversations.

We are changing the conversation about how we build cities around the world. Become a part of this growing movement by becoming a Strong Towns member today.

Dear Neighbors: Karen DeVinney here. I'm announcing my candidacy for City Council. I’m running for City Council District 3 because I want to make sure that Denton’s rapid growth is wisely managed. I believe we need to preserve our neighborhoods and our green spaces as we grow and thrive. The documented shortage of affordable housing in Denton is a complicated problem that will require complicated solutions, not just increasing construction of multifamily housing that bulldozes our trees and crowds out the neighborhoods that make us unique. I bring seven years of experience on the Historic Landmark Commission and experience as a Texas Master Naturalist, as well as many years’ service on various boards, commissions, and neighborhood groups. I am excited to carry the torch of neighborhood preservation forward, and continue that fight against irresponsible development in our city. Let’s get to work!

Good morning Neighbors! Well, it's been too quiet for too long. Please read about a threat to a neighborhood and natural area just north of University Drive. The below story describes democracy at work, as the neighbors band together to fight a zoning change to create a huge apartment complex. It's a situation very similar to that of Northeast Denton along Hartlee Field Road. Both groups could use our help, and knowledge.

More than 80 North Lakes residents are gathering to battle Austin-based InvestCor over a proposed five-building apartment complex in the area. North Lakes residents cite privacy, construction, environmental and traffic

I'm really glad to say that the beautiful Denia neighborhood (the west part of Denton south of I-35E) just might explore applying for historic district status. They've heard from Bell Avenue and West Oak Area. Any other neighborhoods want to help out? The Historic District overlay zoning helps a neighborhood guide development in infill within its borders or rehabbing of existing structures in order to preserve its character. It's not intended to prevent any and all construction. Time for neighbors to help neighbors!

Greetings Neighbors! This group has been pretty quiet, but it was originally set up so that neighbors could help each other out when they're threatened, usually by developments that aren't appropriate. The Friends of Northeast Denton is in need of support. They are the folks north of the Loop and east of Sherman, out near Clear Creek. There's a zoning case coming up on Wednesday for a huge apartment complex on the corner of Sherman and the Loop. It would not meet the goals of the Comprehensive Plan and would generally be an eyesore in an area that is currently still a bit rural. FB is not letting me do a simple "share" so please search for "Friends of Northeast Denton" and ask to join. There's all the info you need to know to get usefully involved. Photo of baby copperhead to just make this post more interesting.

Hi to everyone who's "liked" or joined this group! It's been pretty quiet for a few years, and that's good news. It was formed during a time in city government when residential neighborhoods felt beleagured by developers who wanted inappropriate zoning, such as student housing in historic neighborhoods. This group helped support efforts to fight such zoning changes or projects, by sharing knowledge and by showing up at Planning and Zoning or city council meetings. Citizenship at its finest! If anyone's neighborhood is under threat, please post here and use the resources that are available from your fellow citizens.

For those of you on the west side--we're getting a new park. Come help shape it.

A new park could be coming to Rayzor Ranch Town Center.

Hi Denton Neighborhoods! This page has been pretty quiet lately, which is a good thing. We haven't had any egregious threats to our neighborhoods that have warranted a call to action. And this post is not a call to action, either. It's an invitation to walk the neighborhoods that will be affected by the Oak Gateway Area Plan that is being formulated by a citizens' committee as we speak. The plan covers the area of Denton roughly from University south to UNT, and Bonnie Brae east to Carroll. The focus of the walk will be parking and traffic. If you'd like to learn more, Mark Oliphant from the city's Traffic Engineering department will be leading a group around the core streets. Meet him on Thursday, November 1, at the corner of Fulton and West Oak at 5:30. The walk will take under an hour. For info and to RSVP, contact Ron Menguita: [email protected]
