Fruit of the Spirit, Week 5: Kindness 🤝

This week our students learned about the fifth fruit of the Spirit, Kindness, through the story of David and Mephibosheth. Years after his best friend Jonathan died, King David went looking for anyone left in Jonathan's family so he could show them kindness. He found Jonathan's son, Mephibosheth, who was disabled and living in hiding, fully expecting to be killed since he came from the previous king's family line.

Instead, David restored his family's land to him and gave him a permanent seat at the king's own table for the rest of his life. Mephibosheth hadn't done anything to earn it and had no way to pay David back. The big idea: kindness means treating someone well because of who we are, not because they've earned it or can repay us.

To bring it to life, kids played a drawing game where each kid decorated a "feast" for another kid instead of their own, so everyone ended up with a table full of gifts they didn't create themselves, just like Mephibosheth's seat at David's table.

**Ask your kid tonight:** "Is there someone you could show kindness to this week, even if they haven't done anything to earn it?"

**Fruit of the Spirit, Week 4: Patience 🕊️**

This week our students explored the fourth fruit of the Spirit, Patience, through the story of Abraham. God promised 75-year-old Abraham that he'd become the father of a great nation, with more descendants than the stars in the sky. There was just one catch: he had no children yet, and the promise took 25 years to come true.

We talked about how Abraham and Sarah got tired of waiting after about 10 years and tried to "help" God along by taking a shortcut, which created real family pain down the road. But God kept His promise anyway, and Isaac was born right on God's timing, not theirs.

The big idea: patience isn't just gritting your teeth through a wait. It's trusting God's timing enough that we don't try to force our own solution when things take longer than we'd like.

To make it hands-on, kids played a drawing relay where they had to take turns and freeze on command, on purpose, to let them actually feel the frustration of waiting before we connected it back to Abraham's story.

**Ask your kid tonight:** "What's something you're waiting on right now, and how can you wait well instead of rushing it?"

Children's note!

This is our memory verse for the week! We'd love for you to go over it with your kids at home a few times this week: at dinner, in the car, before bed, wherever works. The more they hear it repeated, the more it sticks. Help plant that seed in their memory.

"If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone."
Romans 12:18 (NIV)

A simple way to start the conversation: ask them what they think it means to "live at peace with everyone," and if there's anyone this week it might apply to. Who might we need to reconcile with this week?

🕊️🕊️🕊️Fruit of the Spirit, Week 3: Peace 🕊️🕊️🕊️

This week our students dug into the third fruit of the Spirit (Peace) using the story of Paul and Barnabas in Acts 15. These two were ministry partners who loved God and loved each other, and they still had a sharp disagreement (over whether to bring John Mark on a mission trip) that led them to go their separate ways for a while.

We talked about how real peace isn't about pretending we never disagree with people; it's about trusting God even in the middle of conflict, and staying open to making things right. Years later, Paul actually asks for that same John Mark to come back and help him in ministry (2 Timothy 4:11), proof that the story didn't end with the disagreement.

To make it stick, small groups drew their own 4-panel comic strips retelling a story of conflict, peace, and reconciliation.

Children's Program: Week 2 of our Fruits of the Spirit!

This week in Sunday school, our kids explored joy as a fruit of the Spirit through the story of the Prodigal Son. We talked about the difference between happiness, which comes and goes with our circumstances, and joy, which comes from knowing we are loved and welcomed no matter what.

The kids followed the younger son's journey home after he had wasted everything, and they watched the father run to meet him before he even reached the door. That image of the father running became the heart of our lesson. It is a picture of how God celebrates us coming home, not because we have earned it, but because we are loved.

Our kids reflected on what it feels like to be fully welcomed after messing up, and talked honestly about whether they relate more to the younger son who needed to come home or the older brother who struggled to celebrate someone else's second chance.

Feel free to ask your child at home who they think they are more like in the story, and what it means that joy isn't something we manufacture but something the Spirit grows in us.
