We had so much fun tabling at the Denton Juneteenth Celebration at Fred Moore Park last weekend!

We did a build your own bus route activity where we asked people if they could put a bus route anywhere in Denton, where would it be? The routes in black are the current operating routes and the ones in color are what people added. A lot of folks talked about wanting coverage on Loop 288 and University Drive.

We had so many great in depth conversations with people about access to public transit, what factors lead to different challenges, and how to actually enact change. Let's keep the conversation going!

Coming soon to KERA PBS.

After screening to two sold-out audiences at the 2026 Denton Black Film Festival, Quakertown, USA will air on KERA's Frame of Mind at 10:00 PM on Juneteenth.

The documentary explores the story of Denton's historic Black community of Quakertown and the lasting impact of its displacement. Through historical records, community voices, and lived memory, the film examines how prosperity, race, and power converged in Denton—and how the legacy of Quakertown continues to shape conversations about belonging, progress, and justice today.

While rooted in Denton, this is not simply a local story. Quakertown's experience reflects a broader history repeated in communities across America, where thriving Black neighborhoods were disrupted, displaced, or erased. The story of Quakertown helps us better understand both our local history and a larger American story.
DBFF is proud to have served as Executive Producer alongside filmmakers King Hollis and Lindell Singleton.

Updated Parade Route Notice
The Denton Juneteenth Committee, in coordination with the Denton Police Department, has updated the official parade lineup location and route for the 2026 Freedom Day Parade.
Participants will now line up along E. Hickory Street in front of the Denton Police Department. Additionally, the final portion of the route has been modified. Rather than proceeding west on Wilson Street as previously communicated, the official route will continue south on Lakey Street toward Fred Moore Park.
We encourage all participants, spectators, and parade entries to review the updated route map prior to parade day. Visit http://DentonJuneteenth.com for more details.

Happy Pride Month! 🏳️‍🌈 We are kicking things off with early voting.

Run off elections for City Council Place 5 and for Mayor are happening now! These are both extremely important races and voter turnout tends to be much lower during local elections, especially run offs.

Early voting starts today, June 1st to June 9th. You can vote at ANY polling location in Denton County during early voting!

Election day is June 13th. On election day, you MUST vote at your assigned polling location on that day.

Public transit and might hang in the balance this election.

Mayoral thoughts:
During Chris Watts time as mayor, we saw our bus system get stripped down to just 3 routes in favor of implementing Gozone. In our interview with Brian Beck for Denton Mayor, he talked about how the math is simple. One Gozone car seats 4 people but a bus can seat 50. He talks about expanding routes and getting back to where Denton public transport was in the past. He also talked about how accessibility and sustainability played a huge role in Denton's infrastructure growth.

Place 5 thoughts:
George for Denton is the current president of Denton Affordable Housing Corp and the Vice President of the Denton County Homeless Coalition. They have talked about affordability being at the core of our housing crisis. They have spent years doing the work when it comes to affordable housing and volunteering in the Denton community. They have the background and experience necessary for this role and most importantly has proven that they will always do what is best for the people of this city.
