The Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR) T1 Steam Locomotive Trust is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization formed for the express purpose of constructing PRR T1 5550, the fifty-third locomotive of its class. The goal is to provide mainline excursion service, and to set the World Speed Record for a steam locomotive. The PRR T1 represents the pinnacle of steam locomotive design in the United States. Theses loco

motives had the capability of achieving speeds in excess of 120 mph, and anecdotal reports indicate that speeds of up to 140 mph were attained. In all, 52 class T1 locomotives were produced, 25 at the PRR's Altoona shops and 27 at the Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia. Sadly not a single example of this magnificent machine escaped the scrapper's torch. The production of PRR T1 5550 will fill a large gap in historical locomotive preservation. Perhaps more importantly, this locomotive will inject new life blood into an aging heritage fleet. Even the youngest US built steam locomotive operating today is over 60 years old. Wear and tear is taking its toll. Efforts such as this one, to create a powerful new machine, will become increasingly important if steam excursion service is to be present in another 60 years.

2026 Chairman's Report by Brad Noble, D.O.

We closed out 2025 as our strongest year to date, with 2026 already building on that momentum. Our fundraising efforts delivered exceptional results: more than $500,000 raised for the boiler, $400,000 for the frame and cylinders, and $1,400,000 to construct the new facility where the T1 will be assembled. In addition, our members contributed another $225,000. It was truly a remarkable year—and the start of 2026 has been even more encouraging.

Twelve years ago, when the idea of building a brand-new T1 first took shape—sparked by the success of our colleagues overseas with their A1 project—it was difficult to envision how we would bring it all together. Today, the team that has formed—our dedicated volunteers, skilled contractors, and most importantly, you, our members and donors—has made what once seemed improbable a reality. By the end of this year, we have a genuine opportunity to see a rolling chassis, complete with cylinders. That kind of progress would have been hard to imagine a decade ago, yet here we are—and we are confident in your continued support to help us reach that milestone.

We are also pleased to share that an anonymous donor has made a significant contribution to the project and secured the naming rights for the locomotive. In honor of this gift, PRR T1 #5550 will tastefully carry the name Dave Fink. Dave Fink began his career as a Pennsylvania Railroad clerk and went on to become the President of the Pan Am Railway. His son, David Fink, currently serves as Administrator of the Federal Railroad Administration. We are proud to recognize this legacy and will be sharing more details about this meaningful dedication in the near future.

As we approach approximately 70% completion, we continue to carefully evaluate our financial path forward. Our projected total cost of $8,000,000 remains on track to see the construction of PRR T1 #5550 through to completion. To date, we have raised over $5,100,000 through the generosity of donors, grants, and in-kind contributions. That places us well beyond the halfway point, with $2,900,000 remaining to be raised over the next two to three years. With the strength of our supporter base, this goal is well within reach.

Looking ahead, we anticipate completing our new building in Dennison, Ohio later this year and moving many of the locomotive’s major components into the facility. When that happens, we look forward to celebrating this milestone with you. It will be an opportunity for fellowship, reflection on the past 12 years, and excitement for the final stretch ahead as we work toward completing the locomotive by 2030.

Thank you for being part of this journey. We look forward to the day when you are behind #5550, riding the rails as the unmistakable tone of the PRR three-chime whistle echoes ahead—marking not just the completion of a locomotive, but the realization of a shared vision.

Progress Report May 2026 - By General Manager Jason Johnson

Having been involved with the PRR T1 Trust for the past ten years, it is remarkable to reflect on how far we have come. Many of the activities we are undertaking today were once only ideas on paper. In my role as General Manager, I am responsible for turning your generous donations into tangible progress, working closely with our engineering team, vendors, and contractors to bring this locomotive to life.

In 2025, much of our focus was on completing the massive locomotive frame and advancing work on the cylinders. The frame was finished mid-year, marking a major milestone, and we then shifted our attention to machining the cylinders in the latter half of the year. At the same time, we worked extensively with our engineering partners on the design and planning of our new 60' x 200' er****on facility in Dennison, Ohio. This process also required multiple environmental reviews, all of which were successfully completed.

The groundwork laid in 2025 has positioned us for an exciting year ahead. Many of you who attended our presentations heard me share a personal goal, to set the frame on its drivers in 2026. I am pleased to say that this milestone is now within reach. Thanks to your continued support, the following progress is underway:

- All eight 80” driver wheels are at the machine shop for final machining (expected completion July 2026)

- All four main axles have been ordered (expected completion July 2026)

-Main Timken roller bearings have been ordered (expected arrival June 2026)

- Driving box patterns are in production (expected completion June 2026)

- Driving tires have been ordered (expected delivery October 2026)
Cylinders are currently being welded (expected completion June 2026)

- Brake rigging components have been ordered (expected completion July 2026)

- Boiler firebox components have been ordered (expected delivery September 2026)

What does this mean for the project? If our contractors and vendors remain on schedule, we anticipate mounting the tires in November and setting the frame onto the completed wheelsets before the end of the year. This would represent an extraordinary step forward. Meanwhile, continued progress on the boiler could see it completed in 2027, allowing it to be mated with the frame and running gear.

Even as I write this, it is incredible to consider that we are approaching this stage of construction. We hope our progress reflects the expectations you have placed in us. Simply put, we move as quickly as your support allows—and thanks to you, that pace continues to accelerate. With less than $3 million remaining to reach completion, and with the momentum we are seeing from our supporters, this goal is well within reach as we work toward a 2030 completion.
We also look forward to welcoming you to an open house at our new facility, anticipated for late this year or spring 2027, depending on construction progress. It will be an opportunity to see firsthand what your support has made possible.
Thank you for being part of this journey.

Working together is what the PRR T1 Trust was built on. We all need each other to be successful. Too often internal politics keep organizations on an island by themselves. Those organizations will dwindle and fail in time.

We want to thank the folks at Virginia Museum of Transportation and the fine folks that take care of Norfolk and Western 4-8-4 #611 for calling us out on our partnerships. Our organizations all share many volunteers and info to make sure each of our organizations continue to grow to develop the next generation of Steam People.

🚂 They’re rolling—literally.

For the first time ever, all eight massive drive wheels for PRR T1 #5550 are together and on the move to the machine shop in Pennsylvania for final machining. This is a huge milestone.

Over the next few weeks, every wheel will be fully machined to final dimensions—preparing us to order the axles, tires, and Timken roller bearings. Once this work is complete, these wheels can finally go under the frame, and the locomotive takes another very real step toward becoming a living, breathing machine.

Progress like this doesn’t happen by accident—it happens because people like you step up.

We still need help covering the cost of this machining work and the materials for the axles. If seeing these wheels rolling forward inspires you, please consider making a donation today. Every contribution directly moves this project closer to steam.

We still think this one of the coolest projects we have completed for the PRR T1 Trust. We wanted to share with the many new followers on a steam injector our team put together and tested on NKP #765 last year and then went on to build 10 more for mainline steam operators all over the country. We will be sharing more on those in the coming weeks. Until then , enjoy watching the first Nathan 4000 injector to be built new in 75 years come to life and fill the boiler of NKP #765.

🚂 Ever wondered what really happens behind the curtain at the T1 Trust?

If you love how things are built—not just that they’re built—you’ll want to check out this engineering-focused podcast from JAKTool. JAKTool founder Jeff Kinsberg sits down with T1 Trust General Manager Jason Johnson for a deep-dive conversation that goes where we rarely get to go publicly.

They talk candidly about the real decision-making, tradeoffs, engineering challenges, and strategy involved in building a brand-new steam locomotive in the 21st century. Jason even lays out a practical blueprint—whether your dream is to build a locomotive of your own or simply understand (and support) how this one is coming together.

Huge thanks to Jeff for giving the T1 Trust the space to tell the full story. We think our followers—especially the engineers, builders, and railfans—will find this one fascinating. 🔧🔥
