We often get asked, where can native plants be purchased? Most nurseries now carry some natives. If you want something in particular, call ahead and ask for it by its scientific name as well as common name. If they don't have the species you are looking for, they may be able to order it in.

Be fussy and ask for their assurance that the native plant you are seeking is not treated with systemic pesticides (neonics) that kill pollinators.

If you haven't heard, APCC has an annual native perennial sale June 3rd. This year, the plants were grown by a wholesale grower that grows from seed. The plants are pesticide-free, peat-free potting soil, and no plastic pots! See more here: https://apcc.org/native-plant-sale/

APCC is excited to offer over 30 different kinds of native plants, grown from seed for resilience and biodiversity, peat-free potting soil, and plastic free! $10 per quart. Sale goes live online June 3rd at 8:30 a.m.

Just beginning to flower now - Sassafras (Sassafras albidum) - a special understory tree in our woodlands and hopefully in your landscape.

It is often removed during development or to open water views. This tree is very difficult to find in the nursery trade, so if it is on your land - please cherish it, and enjoy the fabulous fall color.

It is a host plant to a variety of moths & butterflies; fruits eaten by bob white quail, turkeys and numerous songbirds. https://cornellbotanicgardens.org/plant/sassafras

Barren Strawberry is currently lighting up our pathway at APCC's office in Dennis! Pollinators are finding some nectar: We've observed female carpenter bees and tiny sweat bees.

Waldsteinia fragarioides a great groundcover - almost evergreen, giving it a jumpstart in the spring. Does better in part shade to get through the hot summer. In full sun may burnout in a dry summer, but bounces back in the spring.

Trailing arbutus, the Massachusetts state flower, is just starting to flower. This plant is very difficult to propagate, and therefore is not commonly found for sale. The Native Plant Trust has been known to have some for sale at Garden in the Woods in Framingham.

Please, never take plants from the wild. Just observe and appreciate its beauty and its value to early pollinators.
