🍂 Fall Preparedness: Be Ready Before the Tones Drop 🚑🚒

Fall in Iowa brings cooler temperatures, shorter days, harvest season, changing road conditions, and the beginning of severe weather and winter hazards. For our Volunteer EMS and Fire Services, it’s a great time to make sure we’re ready for what the season can bring.

A few fall preparedness reminders:

🌽 Harvest Season

Watch for slow-moving farm equipment on roadways.
Expect increased agricultural traffic, especially during early morning and evening hours.
Be prepared for farm-related accidents and entrapments.
Make sure your service knows the locations of higher-risk farm and agricultural areas.

🚗 Changing Road Conditions

Increased deer activity means more vehicle/deer crashes.
Falling leaves, rain, and frost can make roads and bridges slick.
Shorter daylight hours can create additional hazards for responders working along roadways.
Review traffic-control and scene-safety procedures.

🔥 Fire & Carbon Monoxide Safety

Heating systems and fireplaces will begin getting more use.
Encourage residents to have furnaces, chimneys, and wood-burning appliances inspected.
Check smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
Remind residents to keep generators and fuel-burning equipment outside and away from buildings.

🌨️ Prepare for the First Freeze

Check that ambulances, response vehicles, and equipment are ready for colder weather.
Make sure batteries, heaters, blankets, fluids, and other cold-weather supplies are ready.
Review procedures for prolonged incidents in cold conditions.

📻 Volunteer Service Readiness

Check radios, pagers, batteries, PPE, medical equipment, and vehicle supplies.
Review mutual-aid and coverage plans.
Make sure members know how to access stations and equipment during after-hours responses.
Take a few minutes to review your service's response area and potential seasonal hazards.

Fall is a good reminder that preparedness doesn't start when the tones drop—it starts before the call.

Thank you to all of our volunteer EMS and Fire personnel who continue to be ready to answer the call, regardless of the season. 🍂🚑🚒

Stay safe. Stay prepared. And watch out for one another.

🚑 Mass Casualty Triage Kits Now in Service Throughout Crawford County 🚑

We’re excited to announce that Mass Casualty Incident (MCI) Triage Kits have now been placed into service with every EMS service throughout Crawford County and our Affiliates.

This project was made possible through a grant from the Omaha Community Foundation : Crawford County HF 2302 Endowment Fund. We are incredibly grateful for their support of local EMS and community preparedness!

Why is this important?

When a large-scale emergency happens, multiple EMS services may be called to work together. In that situation, crews may be working outside their own service area or using equipment from another department.

Every MCI triage bag was intentionally prepared and organized the same way.

That means EMS providers throughout the county can open an MCI bag from another service and know where supplies are located and what they can expect to find inside. Crews don't have to waste valuable time figuring out a different bag or searching for needed supplies.

This standardization helps our agencies work as one coordinated EMS system when multiple services respond to the same incident.

For our patients and the public, this means:

• Faster organization at a mass casualty incident
• Goal of Triage System Improvement: More time focused on patient care.
• Triage System Improvement: Consistent triage supplies and better coordination between responding EMS services.
• Benefit of Triage System Improvement: Less time searching for equipment.

We hope these bags are rarely needed—but if a mass casualty incident occurs, our EMS agencies will be better prepared to respond together.

A huge THANK YOU to the Omaha Community Foundation: Crawford County HF 2302 Endowment Fund for helping make this possible and investing in the preparedness of our communities.

Different services. One system. One standard. One goal: taking care of our patients when they need us most.

September 11, 2001 🇺🇸

To people in EMS, this day means a little more.

As EMS providers we know what it’s like to hear the tones, grab our gear, and head out without knowing exactly what we’re walking into. On this day 25 years ago, so many EMTs, paramedics, firefighters, police officers, and dispatchers and other responders did just that—and some never made it home.

We remember their courage, their sacrifice, and the families and coworkers who have carried that loss. We are proud to be part of a profession built around showing up when people need us.

Today, we remember the ones who didn’t come home and the families and coworkers who were left behind.

We remember. We honor. We never forget. 🇺🇸

🇺🇸 Happy Labor Day from Crawford EMS Association! 🇺🇸

Labor Day began in the late 1800s as a way to recognize the hard work and contributions of American workers. In 1894, it became a federal holiday, celebrated on the first Monday of September.

Today, we honor those who work hard every day to keep our communities strong — especially our EMS providers, firefighters, law enforcement, dispatchers, healthcare workers, and volunteers who answer the call when others need help. 🚑🚒🇺🇸

Thank you for your dedication, sacrifice, and service to our communities.

Have a Safe and Happy Labor Day! ❤️🤍💙
