LULAC Denison and Broadway Elementary Denison Community School have partnered this year for the 7th annual Mayday baskets for nursing home residents!

Children at Broadway Elementary will help make paper baskets and LULAC Denison volunteers will fill them with goodies.

Last year our volunteers successfully assembled May Day baskets for residents of Gracewell, Denison Care Center, and Homestead Assisted Living (a.k.a Reed Place).

These baskets, along with flowers donated from Hy-Vee, were our way of reminding residents that they are loved and valued by the Denison community.

Please help us reach our goal! Any amount helps. Thank you.

Cualquier cantidad ayuda. Gracias.

✨ Miranda Estrada '25 LULAC Denison Scholarship Recipient✨

"Mariachi especially has helped me understand my cultural background. In the fall, I was showcased on NBC News talking about mariachi in rural Iowa. I mentioned how important this genre of music has really impacted my life. I have done 30 hrs
of volunteering. I did some hours at BBQ Fest in town, helped with youth wrestling, helped at a soup dinner at my church, translated at conferences and band meetings, worked at a fundraiser to earn money for a man that had cancer and I helped the library. These opportunities showed me that my community is very important and valuable. By giving back to my community, I develop a deeper understanding of teamwork
and empathy."

"I am constantly seeking opportunities to give back to my community. I believe that being involved in community
activities are essential not only for personal growth but also for cultivating a stronger connection to the world around me. While some of these activities may take me out of my comfort zone, they have taught me the importance of stepping beyond my own limits and embracing new experiences. These experiences, although sometimes daunting, have helped me develop a deeper understanding of the impact art can have
on a community and how I can use my skills to contribute positively to the world."

"...I was also able to give to the community by sharing one of my passions, art. I was able to enter a contest and was chosen to paint a mural at Washington Park. This is one of the
achievements I am most proud of, and being able to share it with the community makes me very happy. While representing diversity and immigration, I was even able to represent a beautiful message and meaning to the rest of the community, and I hope that it made everyone feel welcome in Denison as well. All in all, my academic studies, artistic abilities, and volunteer work have led me to where I am now..."

✨ Christopher Valle '25 LULAC Denison Scholarship Recipient✨

"My main goal in my life is to live comfortably and improve the lives of others in the process. The best way I have seen to do this is to study and advance myself in the field of chemistry. The reason I feel this way is that I could help out places with contaminated water by studying this. I was drawn to helping out in this issue when visiting relatives in Mexico. Oftentimes the water there was heavily mismanaged with it being more polluted than it should be. The only way to fix these issues is through rigorous filtration. This is a process that could be advanced further through chemistry, which is a field I have already grown to love."

✨Maite Arreola '25 LULAC Denison Scholarship Recipient✨

"Throughout this journey of discovering myself, I've also become more in touch with my Mexican roots. I
play my instruments for those willing to listen and tell stories through my songs. More specifically, mariachi
has made me who I am. I've been transformed into a more confident, outspoken, and welcoming
individual. I aim to tell stories and encourage others to do so as well. I aim to lift their voices along with my
own. Community service, such as LULAC, has taught me to connect with those with Hispanic/all roots. The
activities we would host would bring our community together. Working with LULAC also provided a way for
me to raise the voice of others. The number of stories I've heard has been inspiring."
