PART 4 OF 4 ๐Ÿ’›

We ended (Stage 2) Prepare Before the Scare with our adult and caregiver discussion portion focused on communication, preparedness, and understanding the โ€œwhy.โ€

Together we discussed:
โ€ข Emergency medical information within phones
โ€ข Emergency keywords for limited verbal ability
โ€ข The importance of flagging homes where individuals with disabilities live
โ€ข Real-life situations where it is absolutely OK to call 911 for assistance

This portion naturally turned into an open discussion and Q&A, giving caregivers and adults the opportunity to ask responders real-life questions directly.

And this is only the beginning ๐Ÿš‘๐Ÿ’›

Sneak Peek:
STAGE 3 OF 6 โ€” EMS & AMBULANCE FAMILIARITY / TOUCH-A-TRUCK

PART 3 OF 4 ๐Ÿ’›

This is where participants began interacting directly with real medical tools through guided familiarity and play using teddy bears.

We introduced tools like oxygen masks, explaining that while they may look unfamiliar or even a little scary at first, they are there to help.

For participants with allergies, we also introduced EpiPen familiarity and how it is properly used during emergencies.

One participant already knew:
โ€œOrange to the thigh, blue to the sky.โ€ ๐Ÿ’›

PART 2 OF 4 ๐Ÿ’›

Before introducing actual medical equipment, we start with familiarity through play.

Participants were invited to explore medical tools using sensory-aware Manila folder activities, matching and finding equipment before interacting with the real item.

For some, this may seem simple.

For our community, it can be the first step in reducing fear of the unknown.

Preparedness doesnโ€™t begin with an emergency.

It begins with familiarity.

Guess who came to visit us today? ๐Ÿ’›

Mayor-President Sid Edwards stopped by during Stage 2 of Prepare Before the Scare to see firsthand what we are building for our autistic community and families.

We truly appreciate him taking the time to come out, listen, engage, and support expanding accessibility throughout our community.

Such a beautiful day at Couillon Cluckers Farm ๐Ÿ’›

One of my favorite moments from the entire event was watching my daughter and a new friend she made notice that one of the llamas was afraid of the crowd.

They noticed the llama wouldnโ€™t eat while people were too close, so they patiently began trying to build trust with him at his pace.

At one point her new friend tucked his head down and slowly held the feed upward, trying not to make him feel overwhelmed or pressured.

And little by littleโ€ฆ the llama began eating from the cup and interacting on his own time, as long as people didnโ€™t suddenly rush toward him.

It was such a beautiful moment to witness because in that moment I thought:
sometimes animals feel similar fears too โ€” fear of overcrowding, fear of too much happening at once, fear of the unknown.

And kindness, patience, and understanding made all the difference. ๐Ÿ’›
