TOTAL BURN BAN IN EFFECT – Surry County, Virginia

Effective Immediately

Due to extremely dry conditions, elevated fire danger, and the increased risk of rapidly spreading wildfires, a Total Burn Ban is now in effect for all of Surry County.

All outdoor burning is prohibited until further notice. This includes, but is not limited to:

• Debris burning
• Campfires and recreational fires
• Burning of leaves, brush, and yard waste
• Agricultural burning (unless specifically exempted by law)
• Fire pits and outdoor fireplaces
• Any open flame that could ignite surrounding vegetation

Residents are urged to use extreme caution with any activity that could produce sparks or heat, including grilling, welding, operating equipment in dry grass, and discarding ci******es.

Violations of the burn ban may result in fines and other enforcement actions.

County officials will continue to monitor weather conditions and fire danger. The burn ban will remain in effect until conditions improve and the ban is officially lifted.

Virginia's official spring fire season may have ended on April 30, but the ongoing drought and current weather conditions are keeping wildfire risk elevated.🔥📈 The U.S. National Weather Service (NWS) reports increased fire danger across most of Virginia today, May 5, due to low humidity and gusty winds. Postpone outdoor burning and use extra caution with all potential ignition sources.

❗️Full Burn Ban In Effect❗️Due to worsening drought conditions, outdoor burning is prohibited at any hour of the day in Surry County. Ci******es should be disposed of safely, and outdoor machinery and equipment should be used with caution. Let’s all keep Smokey the Bear happy until we receive soaking rainfall in our area.

Dendron Fire is currently working on scene of their second accident this afternoon. We have also heard of accidents from our mutual aid partners. Please stay at home if you can and if you must be out, please SLOW DOWN!

Fall fire season is here, bringing increased fire danger to an already dry Virginia. Most wildfires are started by people, with escaped debris being the leading cause. Here are some key practices for preventing wildfires:

🔥 Keep fires small and far from vegetation
🪣 Have tools and water on hand
📱 Have your phone ready to call 911 in case of an emergency
👀 Stay with your fire until it's out cold

At 16:27 Dendron Fire was alerted for a 2nd due brush fire happening at the Dominion Power Plant. Dendron's crews provided manpower and equipment to the scene and worked with Surry Fire and Dominion Power personnel to extinguish the fire. Dendron operated on scene for 5 hours before finally being relieved by command.

Units on scene AC51, AC61, Rescue 1, E54, T55, A57, B66, T65, E64.

We would like to THANK everyone for the support of our Sweet Corn Fundraiser yesterday. We moved a record amount of sweet corn at a rapid pace. We also responded to 2 minor calls for service yesterday in our district during the fundraiser. A false fire alarm, and a Landing Zone for LifeEvac. Stay safe and hydrated as the holiday approaches! 🇺🇸
