Despite giving up five runs in the first inning, Bethlehem rallied to defeat Ballston Spa 6-5 this afternoon in the first round of Section 2 action.
Annalisea McCloskey singled in the first inning to put Bethlehem runners at first and second, after Lila Hanlon walked. Emma Hanlon then doubled to deep center field to score Lila Hanlon and Molly Campbell singled to left field, scoring McCloskey. Anna Franchini came up next and ripped a single into right field to score Hanlon and Campbell. At the end of the first inning the Eagles got within one run, the score was 5-4.
In the third inning Emma Hanlon doubled again, this time to left field. She advanced to third base two batters later when Izzy Kirk flew out to right field. Franchini then drove one up the middle to score Hanlon to tie the game, 5-5.
The Eagles scored, what would be the game winning run, in the bottom of the fifth inning when Campbell got hit by a pitch and then scored on a double by Kirk.
Lyla Hanlon earned the win for Bethlehem. The starter surrendered three hits and five runs (two earned) over seven innings, striking out three and walking four. Hanlon did not give up a hit or a run after the first inning. The only other inning, that Hanlon didn’t sit them down 1,2,3 was in the fifth when she walked one Scottie and one reached on an error.
Franchini led Bethlehem with three RBIs on the day. She and Emma Hanlon each collected two hits, while Hanlon and Campbell scored two runs a piece for the Eagles.
With the win, Bethlehem moves to the second round of the Section 2 tournament, taking on Queensbury, May 28th at 7pm. The game will be played at Lansingburgh HS.
