Happy Black History Month🖤
Today we will be talking about Marsha P. Johnson.

Marsha P. Johnson was a Transgender women and apart of the LGBTQ+ liberation activists. She left her home right after highschool with only $15 and a one way ticket to NYC. During her time in NYC she started out waiting tables. When she finally met some people that were apart of the gay community she was finally able to free herself from her past and become who we all know of today which is a strong powerful activist women! She happen to be one of the most significant people in the Stonewall uprising and Gay Rights Movement. Whenever there was a raid against Stonewall Johnson was always there protesting and using her powerful voice. She helped create the Street Transgender Action Revolutionaries with Sylvia Rivera this is an organization that provides help and housing to the homeless s*x workers + q***r youth. Johnson always partnered up with the AIDS Coalition organization. The work Johnson had done to protect and fight for her fellow LGBTQ+ made her reconaziable for the whole movement during that time and even current time. She is an important face for this community. She dedicated her soul to help those in the community become free of the hate she had received.

February is Black History Month, so DMA has decided to share some stories about African Americans that you may not have heard of. First up is Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler. Born in 1831 and died in 1895, she is best remembered as the first African-American woman physician in the United States. In 1852, she worked as a nurse, but in 1860 she was accepted into the New England Female Medical College to earn her degree to be a physician. In 1864, Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler became the ONLY African American graduate from the school.

Soon after, she and her husband moved to Boston, where she practiced medicine. She then published a book of her various medical notes in 1883 called "A Book of Medical Discourses"; she dedicated it to mothers and nurses as it was filled with medical care on women and children. Her legacy lives on at a pre-health club named "The Rebecca Lee Pre-Health Society," found at Syracuse University. They offer mentors, workshops, and resources to help its members of diverse backgrounds to succeed in their pursuit of health professions.

Our first ever accomplishment was putting together Delanco's first Black Lives Matter march in June of 2020. We were inspired by the nationwide marches coming together to protest the injustice deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and many more. We had around 100-200 people show up to march with us, and afterwards we listened to many personal accounts of injustice in our own community.

Were you present at the march and want to share a favorite memory or photo from it? Drop it down in the comments below!

Hello! In an effort to build more transparency, as well as continue to spread more awareness of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in our community, our team will be posting more on this page. We apologize for our absence, but please reach out if you have any questions, comments, or concerns. Starting this week, we will be putting an in-depth post on a 2020 accomplishment of DMA each week.

In order to celebrate Black History Month, we will also be putting together short, informational profiles on important Black figures who often go unrecognized or under-celebrated. Have suggestions on this? We'd love to hear them in the comments below!

Interested in learning more about DMA or potentially joining us? Message us and someone will get back to you very soon!
