What a wonderful area resource!! A brand new 100 bed PADS (Public Action to Deliver Shelter) less than an hour away from Dekalb County. I’ll definitely be meeting with them soon to discuss residency requirements and how we can work together. This may ease the number of out-of-town homeless sleeping unhoused in our community. Again, Hope Haven would like to extend our appreciation for the emergency support we received when we needed it last week. We were able to shelter everyone that night and they all had a soft place to sleep off the floor, a pillow, blankets, and a full stomach. Thank you for responding to our plea. Whether you donate a loaf of bread or a check for $100, we are equally grateful. People should only give what they can. If all you have are prayers and hope for us, those are also blessings. It’s our collective compassion for helping others that truly make a difference. No one can do it alone.

We’d like to respond to questions we’ve received about our services. People physically staying in the shelter are only from Dekalb County. That doesn’t mean we don’t help those who are homeless in our community from other areas. We follow up on every call or Facebook post regarding a potential homeless person or family living outside. If they refuse to go to the shelter, there is nothing we can do but provide food, hygiene supplies, and the offer to go to Hope Haven for showers and meals.

If they’re from out of the county, we can provide a few days of shelter where we can try and help them contact a friend, family member, or another shelter of their choice. For their destination, we provide transportation and food for their trip. We would never just dump anyone in another location. We call to make sure they’re leaving to a place where they can get the care and assistance they need, (and we hope they will eventually find their own home).

We at Hope Haven really try to do our best. We have compassion for anyone who is homeless, no matter where they are from. We know we are not perfect and sometimes we struggle with what to do about certain situations. We are open to your feedback, whether good or bad, as we strive to do the best we possibly can. Sometimes that even means accepting our own limitations.

Thank you again for letting us lean on you when we knew we needed help. We worked together, and it worked.
