🌱 THANK YOU FROM THE DeFUNIAK SPRINGS DAYLILY CLUB! 🌱

What a wonderful Saturday! We especially want to say a HUGE THANK YOU to everyone from our community who came out to our DAYLILY PLANT SALE, purchased plants, talked gardening with us, and supported the DeFuniak Springs Daylily Club!

Whether you purchased one plant or a whole armful, your support means more than you know! Every purchase helps our club continue sharing daylilies, providing educational opportunities, welcoming new gardeners, and promoting this wonderful hobby throughout our community.

We also thank everyone who joined us inside for the American Daylily Society Region 12 Fall Meeting, “Rooted in Daylilies.” It was a great day of education, auctions, raffles, food, fellowship, friendships, and plenty of daylilies!

A daylily clump left untouched for six years isn't showing you fatigue. It's showing you a math problem, and the math simply doesn't work out to more flowers.
Here's what's actually happening underground in that thick tangle of tuberous roots. Every fan of foliage in a daylily clump is connected to and drawing from a shared root system, and that root system has a finite capacity for pulling up water and nutrients from the surrounding soil. In the plant's first few years, there's plenty of room and resources to go around, so energy flows generously toward flower production. But daylilies are vigorous growers, and a small clump can expand dramatically within just three or four years. Once that root mass fills its available space and the roots start competing directly with each other rather than with the surrounding soil, the plant's priorities necessarily shift. Basic survival and foliage maintenance take precedence over the energy-expensive work of producing blooms.
There's a visual tell that often shows up before bloom count even drops noticeably, and it's worth checking for specifically. Overcrowded clumps frequently develop what's sometimes called a doughnut effect, where the center of the clump goes dry, thin, or even bare while healthy new growth keeps pushing out around the perimeter. That's the oldest, most resource-starved portion of the root system essentially giving up while younger fans at the edges, with better access to open soil, continue thriving. Dense, overlapping foliage compounds the problem further by blocking airflow around the base of the plant, which can also increase susceptibility to fungal issues.
The fix is refreshingly simple compared to the problem it solves. Most extension resources and experienced growers recommend dividing daylily clumps roughly every three to five years, though the plant itself is really the better guide than a fixed calendar. Fewer or smaller blooms, a hollowed out center, or fans packed so tightly they're crowding each other out are all signals it's time. Early spring as new growth emerges, or late summer into early fall once blooming has finished, are both workable windows, and dividing gives you the added bonus of extra plants to fill in other parts of the garden or share.
Once divided and replanted with real space between fans, typically 18 to 24 inches, that same clump goes right back to putting its energy where it belongs

August 25 was a fun day in the world of Daylilies for the Defuniak Club as we had Mrs Regina Richardson as our esteemed speaker from Indian Camp Daylilies. She gave a wonderful presentation on Daylilies, answering many questions and showing beautiful seedlings while sharing about the garden during the National as well as plans for the future! We had amazing auction plants!

We had a total of 20 members present with the addition of 9 guest of which most joined both the club and AHS. At present we have 45 paid members for the 2026 year. We have around 60 plus on roster. That means that in the last two years, since our restart post COVID, we’ve had 60 plus different individuals who have attended atleast one of our local meetings. We are presently running around 25-30 members actively at any given meeting. We have a good variety of members and we are so thankful for the ongoing support that each has to offer! We are truly a ‘Daylily family’ and that family is growing!
Each month we have a meal, games, doorprizes, auction plants, raffles and a variety of other things that enhance the development of our club in both knowledge and fellowship surrounding our beloved plant, ‘the Daylily’.
When fun, fellowship, commeraderie and love come together, one can only begin to blossom into what we’ve been blessed to achieve. It indeed takes everyone working together and we are forever grateful to our friends from near and far who help us continue along in this journey!

As we mark our second year, we are excited to host our first ever AHS Regional on October 3! We are excited and look forward to seeing you soon!

I can attest, great things are taking place in Region 12 and we invite you to come and join as we connect the past to the present, treasuring the memories and looking forward to the future!

Our club has some great things in the works in the near future, if all continues to flourish. We are truly blessed with a wonderful leadership team that brings vigor, strength, vitality, wisdom and accountability to our club. We’ve been blessed with a wonderful treasurer and who knows how to crunch numbers, a wonderful secretary and second treasurer/secretary who keeps records to a ‘t’ and an excellent VP who connects us with wonderful speakers while donating superb plants! Everyone is involved in one way or another from the raffle expert, to superb cooks, knowledgeable gardeners, all the way down to the volunteers who is always faithful at a moments notice. Furthermore, we are appreciative of our other fellow clubs who lock arms with us as we continue to have fun!
As stated, we have some great things in store, so be on the lookout and come join and if you have any questions, do not hesitate to reach out!

It’s been a while, since I’ve been able to get to a meeting but have tried to keep up with all the post. It sure does one’s heart good to see the progress the club has made. Hats off to those driving the push to keep DFS Daylily Club active and on the map in the panhandle!
