National Dog Day | Celebrating Our SAR K9s in Training

This National Dog Day, we’re celebrating some very special members of the Powell County Search and Rescue team — our Search & Rescue K9s in training!

These incredible dogs and their handlers are putting in the work every day, building the skills, confidence, teamwork, and trust needed to one day answer the call when someone is missing or in need.

Becoming a certified SAR K9 takes countless hours of training, dedication, patience, and a strong partnership between dog and handler. We’re proud of the progress our new K9 teams are making and excited to watch them grow into an important part of our Search and Rescue mission.

Today, we celebrate the dogs who give their all to serve their communities — and the handlers who dedicate countless hours alongside them.

Training Together

Last weekend was a great day of training, teamwork, and time together! 🐾🧭🚑

Our team put in the work practicing with our K9s, sharpening our GPS and navigation skills, working through first aid scenarios, and getting hands-on with a variety of SAR equipment.

But training isn’t just about skills—it’s also about building the trust and teamwork that make us stronger when we’re called to help someone in need. We even made time to slow down, laugh, and enjoy some quality downtime together. ❤️

A big group, a lot of learning, and an even stronger team. We’re proud of the dedication our members continue to show!

🌧️ A simple trick can make all the difference when the weather turns.

One of the easiest ways to keep your essential gear dry is to line the inside of your backpack with a heavy-duty trash bag. While rain covers help, water can still find its way through zippers, seams, and your back panel. A pack liner provides an extra layer of protection for the gear that matters most.

🎒 Keep these items dry:
✅ Sleeping bag
✅ Extra clothing
✅ Emergency supplies
✅ Food
✅ Electronics
✅ First aid kit

Being prepared isn't about having the most expensive gear—it's about making smart choices before you hit the trail.

🏔️ Adventure starts with preparation.

Montana’s backcountry offers incredible opportunities to explore—but it also demands respect. Before you head into the mountains, take a few minutes to prepare. It could make all the difference.

🥾 Backcountry Safety Checklist:
🗺️ Plan your route and check weather conditions
📍 Tell someone where you’re going and when you’ll be back
🎒 Pack the 10 Essentials, including extra food, water, navigation tools, a first aid kit, and emergency supplies
💧 Stay hydrated and take breaks
👢 Wear proper footwear and clothing for changing conditions

⚠️ Remember that mountain weather can change quickly, trails can be rugged, rivers run cold and fast, wildlife is active, and cell service may be limited—or nonexistent.

At Powell County Search & Rescue, we’re here when you need us, but our goal is for every adventure to end safely at home.

Whether you’re hiking, camping, fishing, floating the river, or exploring the backcountry, taking a few simple precautions can help ensure everyone returns home safely.

🧭 Before you head out:
💧 Stay hydrated
🌞 Avoid the hottest part of the day
🥾 Wear appropriate footwear and clothing
🗺️ Tell someone where you’re going and when you plan to return
🎒 Carry the essentials, including a first aid kit, water, food, a flashlight, and a fully charged phone

Last night, Powell County Search and Rescue held a full-team mock search, including our K9 teams. Our K9s were so fast that we couldn’t even get a picture of them in action!

Thanks to the dedication and teamwork of everyone involved, we successfully located all of our victims and got them home safely.

A huge thank you to our community volunteers for giving their time and helping make this training possible. Your support is invaluable.
