Today we came to the Knesset’s Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee for a discussion on extending the secrecy order covering the EAPC (Europe Asia Pipeline Company).
For anyone who needs a reminder – here are three reasons why it is absolutely wrong(!) to continue this secrecy in its current form:
1️⃣ EAPC operates in extremely sensitive areas – including the coral reef in Eilat – and has a direct impact on Israel’s environment, public health, economy, and tourism. That’s why it’s essential that its operations be subject to full public oversight.
2️⃣ EAPC has been responsible for some of Israel’s worst environmental disasters, such as the massive oil spill in the Evrona Nature Reserve and pollution in Nahal Zin. Transparency is crucial to preventing future disasters.
3️⃣ There is no longer any security justification for maintaining secrecy. This is a relic from the period when EAPC was jointly owned with Iran – a situation that ended in 1979. Circumstances have changed since then, but the secrecy remains, now functioning mainly as a shield against public scrutiny and to conceal dangerous projects such as expanding oil transport.
Bottom line: It’s time for EAPC to operate openly and transparently, as befits a government-owned company that should first and foremost serve the public interest.
