Forests for Monarchs

Forests for Monarchs Our Story:

Since the late 1990s, the monarch butterfly population has fallen dramatically.

Since 1997, Forests for Monarchs, a program of La Cruz Habitat Protection Project, has helped restore the forest in high need areas and communities around the Monarch Biosphere Reserve and Highland Lakes Watershed Region of Michoacán, Mexico. This dangerous decline has been linked to loss of winter habitat in the mountains of Michoacán, Mexico, due to unsustainable logging and clear-cutting; heavy

use of pesticides and herbicides in the U.S. and Canada that kill milkweed, the plant crucial to the monarch’s breeding survival; heavy use of neonicotinoids (neonics) that kill pollinators through poisoned nectar; as well as global climate change. At Forests for Monarchs, a program of La Cruz Habitat Protection Project, we reforest land in and around the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve where millions of monarchs spend each winter, and in the Highland Lakes watershed area in Michoacán, Mexico. Our Mission:

To support the long-term survival of the monarch butterfly through the conservation and restoration of crucial forest land. To do that, we reforest both the Monarch Biosphere Reserve and badly degraded land owned by indigenous communities, ejidos, and farmers.

🦋 Join Us: Gardening for Monarchs Webinar 🌿

What you plant in your backyard can make a real difference for monarch butterflies.

Join us on April 13 at 6 PM EST for a live conversation exploring how gardening for monarchs — from planting milkweed to designing pollinator-friendly spaces — connects to the broader effort to protect this iconic species across its migration.

We’ll be joined by:

Cynthia Zhang, Founder of Monarchs Matter
Michaela Rogers, Wildlife Biologist, Kentucky Department of Fish & Wildlife Resources
Our team at Forests for Monarchs, sharing insights from habitat restoration work in Mexico

This will be an informal, engaging discussion with time for audience Q&A.

What fire takes, we must help rebuild. 🔥🌲🦋

The video below shows a site we lost to fire a few years ago. Sadly, we’re now facing that same reality again.

Two recent fires have impacted sanctuary areas within the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve—places that serve as critical overwintering habitat for monarch butterflies and support entire forest ecosystems.

Wildfires are becoming more common and intense. While some are natural, many are human-caused—and preventable.

Here’s how we can all help reduce the risk of wildfires:
✅ Avoid open flames and campfires in dry forests
✅ Never burn trash or debris near protected areas
✅ Support reforestation and forest health
✅ Plant native trees to build climate and fire resilience
✅ Talk with others about fire safety and forest protection

We can’t prevent every fire, but we can help restore what’s been lost.

This Pollinator Week, we’re raising $1,000 to plant 1,000 trees in fire-impacted areas of the Reserve.
Every $1 plants a tree. Will you help?

Trees and pollinators go hand in hand 🌳💛

Monarch butterflies rely on milkweed and nectar-rich plants during the spring and summer, but in winter, they need trees.

That’s why we plant native species like oyamel fir, smooth-bark Mexican pine, Gregg’s pine, and Mexican white pine—vital shelter for overwintering monarchs and other migratory and endemic species.

With another fire recently impacting the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve, the need for reforestation is greater than ever.

🌱 Help us raise $1,000 this week to reforest critical habitat.
Every $1 = 1 tree planted.

🌼 Pollinator Week is almost here! 🦋🌳

Next week kicks off —a time to celebrate the pollinators that power our ecosystems and food systems.

We’ll be sharing stories, facts, and ways you can help monarchs, bees, and more. But why wait?

🔥 Let’s get a head start!

We’re raising $1,000 to plant 1,000 trees in the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve and its buffer zone. These trees will support pollinator habitat and help restore areas recently impacted by devastating fires.

💛 Give early, grow impact:
