Who’s Behind Dedham’s Beloved Community Events?
Do you ever wonder who is behind the free summer concerts at the Endicott Estate, the Annual Craft Fair held each fall at the Dedham Middle School for more than 40 years, or the popular Breakfast with Santa every December? The answer is the Dedham Junior Women’s Club (DJWC).
Founded locally in 1979 under the Junior Membership of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs, the Dedham Junior Women’s Club is a nonprofit organization made up of intergenerational women from all walks of life, united by a shared commitment to giving back to the community.
DJWC provides financial support to Dedham schools and local organizations and encourages hands-on volunteerism in a variety of meaningful ways. Members participate in at least one committee aligned with their interests and talents, including Arts and Culture, Arts at Endicott, Civic Engagement and Outreach, Communications, Education and Libraries, Environment, Health and Wellness, Membership, and Socials and Programs. There truly is a place for everyone.
Funds raised by the club are reinvested directly into the community, supporting organizations such as the Dedham Youth Commission and the Dedham Food Pantry. Several annual scholarships are awarded to high school seniors going on to college, and to women pursuing a career in nursing or returning to higher education. Of special note is DJWC’s Empowerment Grant, which helps local women enhance their skills, knowledge, and opportunities through educational pursuits. Grants may be used for college coursework, seminars, licensing programs, and certification courses. Applications are considered for all monetary amounts and are available at www.djwc.org.
The community is invited to attend DJWC’s general meetings, held on the fourth Tuesday of each month from September through May at 7:00 p.m. at the Endicott Estate. Membership is open to all women, regardless of town of residence.
The next meeting will be held on January 27, featuring light refreshments, a brief business meeting, an overview of each committee, and time to socialize with members. For more information, email [email protected]—or simply come by and see what DJWC is all about.
