Winneshiek County Conservation is piloting a group purchase program for high-quality low-cost backyard compost bins. We’ve already had quite a few Winneshiek County residents sign reserve bins, but we’d like to get the word out to more folks who might be interested.

Hello Gardeners !
There are now 3 tanks at the garden. Parks and Rec is trying to keep up with our water use. Please be patient. Several gardeners were helping each other water tonight. It’s easy to loose your cool in our hot and very dry summer. Parks and Rec will continue to monitor our water needs. Very thankful that they support the garden and supply water.

It’s hard to wait but better for our pollinators!

Now that the weather is turning, we are excited for the warm months ahead. But before we go full clean-up mode in our gardens, we have to wait for our pollinator pals. Most overwintering insect pollinators start to emerge when soils temperatures reach around 50 degrees Fahrenheit. This means they need a few weeks of warming weather before they make their spring debut! While we wait, take this extra time to plan and plot out which pollinator friendly plants will work best for your space.

As you look out at your yard, perhaps consider:

Nobody needs an extensive lawn that looks like a golf course. But it is completely reasonable to wish for a little space to sit and play in the outdoors. A place where kids can run barefoot and where we can put a picnic blanket. But just ask yourself: how much do I need for myself and my family, and how much room can I save to support a healthy environment? www.healthyyards.org
