Seed Savers Exchange

Seed Savers Exchange We steward Americaʼs culturally diverse and endangered garden and food crop legacy.
(1587)

Seed Savers Exchange was founded in Missouri in 1975 by Diane Ott Whealy and Kent Whealy. Diane's grandfather entrusted to them the seeds of two garden plants, ‘Grandpa Ott's’ morning glory and ‘German Pink’ tomato. These seeds, brought by Grandpa Ott's parents from Bavaria when they immigrated to Iowa in the 1870s, became the first two varieties in the collection. Diane and Kent went on to form a

network of gardeners interested in preserving heirloom varieties and sharing seeds. Today, with 13,000 members and 20,000 plant varieties, Seed Savers Exchange makes its home on 890 scenic acres in Winneshiek County, Iowa, at Heritage Farm. Seed Savers Exchange conserves biodiversity by maintaining a collection of over 20,000 different varieties of heirloom and open-pollinated plants, varieties with the ability to regenerate themselves year after year. These seeds (and tissue cultures or other plant materials, depending on how a plant reproduces) have the power to withstand unforeseen pestilence and plant disease, climate change, and limited habitat, and to stop dinnertime boredom forever.

Can you imagine a world without flowering plants? We can’t, either! That’s why we’re loving the perennials blooming in Diane’s Garden at Seed Savers Exchange’s Heritage Farm right now—the irises, spiderwort, chives, and tall russell lupine are all showing their colors, to the delight of visitors and staff alike.

Ahhh, flowers! They enhance our world with sumptuous colors and fragrant scents all while sustaining biodiversity and driving food production. And there’s no better time to give them a little extra love for all they do than today, National Water a Flower Day! We hope you’ll fill up that watering can, turn that spigot, pull out that hose, or turn on that drip-irrigation system and make sure your flowers—well, all your plants!—are well-hydrated. Just make sure you don’t overdo it; over-watering your plants is just as harmful as under-watering them. Too much water saturates the soil, pushing out oxygen and essentially suffocating roots.

Signed, sealed, and delivered! The Svalbard (Norway) Global Seed Vault recently accepted a shipment of 54 unique varieties carefully packed by these Seed Savers Exchange staff members. The varieties, sent to Svalbard for backup, spanned 13 crop types and included storied varieties like the ‘Franny’ bean and the ‘Peg O’ My Heart’ tomato.

The Norwegian government built the Svalbard Global Seed Vault in 2008 to store seeds from around the world as a safeguard against biodiversity loss. Svalbard is located just 800 miles from the North Pole, where the vault tunnels 500 feet into an icy mountain. Today, the vault houses more than 1.38 million varieties of seeds, including more than 4,050 varieties from Seed Savers Exchange. Fun fact: Seed Savers Exchange is the only genebank that has deposited seeds every year since the seed vault opened.

There’s been plenty to entertain the robins we’ve spotted at Heritage Farm these past few weeks! Our farm team has been busy moving plants from the greenhouses and hardening-off area into the gardens all while prepping soil, spreading mulch, and laying drip-irrigation tubing. Tomatoes, peppers, broccoli, collards, lettuce, peas, beans, cowpeas, and flowers such as hollyhocks, nasturtiums, and zinnias are just a few of the crops we have begun planting out in our gardens. What crops are you most excited about growing this year?

The United Nations established the International Day for Biological Diversity (May 22) in 1993 to increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues. Now more than ever, biological diversity (including seed diversity) is absolutely essential to safeguard the future of our planet. Today, this biodiversity is under threat. Here at Heritage Farm, we work to preserve biodiversity by caring for and sharing the nearly 20,000 heirloom, open-pollinated varieties in our gene bank, while educating and encouraging others to do the same.

Once the danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed, it’s time to plant tomatoes! Every year, the farm team plants over a thousand tomato transplants, and our farm director, Corbin, has some transplanting tips to share! Watch to learn how to transplant tomatoes in your garden.

Last week, our farm team planted hundreds of young asparagus starts! We are regenerating three asparagus varieties—‘Culver Williams,’ ‘Taos Wild,’ and ‘Conover’s Colossal'—to increase our seed supply. These plants were started from seed in February, and we will be able to harvest seed from them in only three short years! Have you ever grown asparagus from seed?

The term “heirloom seeds” has increased in popularity in recent years, but what exactly does it mean?

While some organizations label seeds as heirlooms according to dates—for example, a variety that dates back more than five decades—Seed Savers Exchange identifies heirlooms by verifying and documenting the generational history of preserving and passing on the seed, emphasizing the seed’s tie to a specific group of people. “Heirloom” describes a seed’s heritage, specifically a documented heritage being passed down from generation to generation within a family or community.
