We have a new litter of absolutely adorable Dachshund/Shih Tzu/Pug mix puppies ready to start looking for their forever homes!!

These little armfuls of soft puppy fur are as sweet as they come. They love being outside, running, exploring, playing, and soaking up all the fun that puppy life has to offer. Each one has their own personality, too. A couple are sweet little snugglers who happily melt right into your arms, while a couple are more independent adventurers who prefer to bounce around and play.

They’ve lived with other dogs, enjoy playing with kids, and are currently working on potty training. Like all puppies, they’ll need patient families ready for training, consistency, love, and all the silly puppy chaos that comes with raising a baby dog.

Amelia’s story began with many unknowns.

We don’t know how she ended up separated from her mama. We don’t know how long she had been on her own. We don’t know what her future would have looked like if a kind person hadn’t rescued her when they did.

We only know that when she arrived, she was tiny, skinny, covered in ticks, with a sore eye and ears full of gravel.

At first, we weren’t sure if she was strong enough to pull through.

But this spicy little survivor took some time to rest and heal and then decided it was time to play-and she hasn’t stopped since.

She’s been making up for lost time by playing hard, climbing high, watching the world with bright curiosity, and trying to take down the biggest cats in her foster home like she’s ten times her size.

Happy National Best Friends Day!!

Today is all about celebrating the friends who make life better-the ones who bring us comfort, make us laugh, and love us just as we are.

And sometimes, those very best friends have paws, whiskers, wagging tails, soft ears, and tiny toe beans.

A pet’s love and friendship is woven into the small things-the snuggles, the walks, the daily routines, and the quiet comfort of simply being there. They greet us like we’re the best part of their day, sit with us through the hard moments, love us even on our worst days, and remind us what loyal, unconditional companionship looks like.

Here at the shelter, we have so many wonderful pets waiting for that kind of friendship- a person to love, a home to settle into, and a life where they can be someone’s best friend.

Meet our newest kittens: a tiny collection of storm-cloud grays, one little tuxedo, midnight black, and a charcoal cutie with white-tipped fur-all hoping their families find them soon.

These little ones are still feeling a little unsure of the big world around them. The shelter can be a lot when you’re tiny, new, and still learning how to be brave.

They’re ready to trade the four walls of a cat condo for cozy laps, sunny windows, toys, snuggles, and all the good things kitten life should be full of.

Meet Bridges-8 months old, ridiculously handsome, and owner of the most soulful eyes and softest ears around.

This Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler/Labrador mix is smart, sweet, and has a great “sit.” He loves treats of all kinds, which means he’s eager to learn and very happy to show off for a snack.

Bridges is the perfect mix of adventure buddy and cuddle companion. He’d love to hit the trails with you, then come home, soak up all the pets and attention, and snuggle in on the couch like he was always meant to be there.

PLEASE HELP US FIND BOO SO HE CAN GET TO HIS NEUTER APPOINTMENT!! This handsome boy went missing (presumably to skip out on an upcoming vet appointment) from his home across the street from the Hubba Hubba in Waukon. He is all black with a brown undercoat that appears black/brown in the sun. He is a chatty male who is VERY friendly and "will get lovings from anyone who even looks in his direction," according to his mom. He had a light purple reflective collar on when he went missing, which he may or may not still be wearing. If you see him or have taken him in, please contact HSNEI so we can help get him home and to that very important vet appointment!!

Amelia made it through Monday, but from the looks of it, just barely.

This tiny but mighty girl had a very full day of kitten business-playing hard, exploring every corner, napping like a champ, and working hard on growing big and strong one ounce at a time.

Kitten season is equal parts exhausting and adorable, but moments like this are the sweetest reminder that every bit of time and care invested in these little ones truly matters.

Amelia still has a little growing to do, but before long, she’ll be ready to meet her forever family.

With Kitten Season upon us again, sometimes the tiniest new arrivals need more than just full bellies and some love-they need a place to feel safe while they figure out the world.

For one unsure little kitten, this repurposed World’s Best box became the perfect safe space-a cozy hideaway, a tiny play area, and a little confidence-building corner all in one.

The Humane Society 🐾 of Northeast Iowa sets up a booth directly across from the Commercial Hall - and just to the south of the bandstand. Look for the bright blue Humane Society tablecloth! There is a shady overhang on this building and that’s where they sell pop and water! 💯% of the proceeds from this go to the Humane Society to help animals in Northeast Iowa!
