Building the Agricultural City

Building the Agricultural City The Agricultural City is about building regional rural economies and cultures while healing the land and its communities.

We have a book, Building the Agricultural City, which describes existing tools, such as community development banks and worker-owned cooperatives, that can be assembled within a region to increase self-reliance and self-sufficiency. But experience has shown those of us who are members of the Building the Agricultural City group, community development must precede economic development. Rural towns

are exceedingly territorial, so the first step in economic development in rural areas must be to overcome their resistance to cooperation. One necessary step is to encourage urban migration out of cities into rural areas. Another is to promote the arts and develop ways for the towns to exchange arts programs—spoken word, music, visual arts.
