Last weekend we had the pleasure of taking out 10 veterans for our annual Bucky Tanton memorial hunt. 14 deer where taken across all the properties. I believe 3 vets didn’t get a deer which is a pretty good day. We started the day with the traditional FEO burrito then sent them out with their volunteer guides and waited. 3 deer where taken almost immediately. As the day progressed the text started coming in. Deer down!…. That’s what we like to read.

A lot of years ago we moved away from being a solely veteran hunt only type org. Mostly because we all have families and we understood the importance of getting kids in the outdoors. So we always offer our veterans the chance to take a kid out with them. This year we had two. And both harvested their first deer! Nothing makes me feel better then kids taking game.

The weather cooperated with just a dusting of snow. We did call in a dog to progress and verify a track that we couldnt figure out the night before. Folks if you think you need a dog, call a dog. If you don’t know one Nugent's Tracking Service does a wondeful job.

We try and roll out the red carpet for the folks that get to attend. Heated shacks, rides to and from the blinds, breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks and drinks for the blinds, heck we even gut their deer if they want us to. It’s always a long day but seeing folks interact like they do at deer camp is good for the soul.

Every year we have a pile of volunteers and landowners that make this happen. As we place a volunteer with every veteran there are actually more volunteers then particpants.

I’d like to give a special thanks to the landowners that allow us to take game:

Craig and Michelle Wilson
Al and Barb Rogers
Gavin Gage and the Ferguson family
Lu Boggs
Tracy and the late “Bucky Tanton”
Brandon Swoffer and family
Joe Braun

With out your graciousness these hunts wouldn’t be possible. For that all of Team FEO Thanks You.

Lastly to my staff and volunteers-thank you guys for making this an absolute memorable experience for these folks, there are alot of unsong heros in the background of this…until next time cheers folks!

This past weekend Larry and sons from Schena roofing and sheet metal took our last two veterans out for the final leg of our yearly doe hunt. Both veterans connected on a couple decent does. The crew laid out a spread for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Dinner looked delicious! We appreciate you guys more than you know and congratulations to the veterans on the successful hunts!

Cheers till next year!

So now that the last leg of our annual Bucky Tanton memorial doe hunt has concluded it’s time for an official couple of post. The initial hunt started with 9 veterans and 9 deer being shot. Most veterans shot their own deer. A couple did double up and spread the wealth to the non shooters.

Folks this event takes a lot of man power as we normally, pending blind size, sit a volunteer with every vet. So to our volunteers. You guys kick ass like always and we appreciate you. To our landowners these events are pretty hard to do without you folks opening up your hunting spots for these deserving folks and we are always thankful for you guys. Craig Wilson,Michelle Wilson, Gavin Gage and the Ferguson family, as well as Jerold and Johanna from Outback Custom Meat thank you guys again.

This year we had a couple deer tracking dogs on site for demonstration and utilization if needed. They did wonderful and a special thanks to Nugent's Tracking Service and River Game Recovery

We would like to also thank the national honor society kids that helped prepare the meals as well. Great way to get kids involved!

Michelle is another one of our volunteers and property owners that not only volunteers there time but open up there hunting club to us to use as base camp. Swampy bottoms hunt club has been an integral component to our success since the start of our memorial doe hunt. Thank you Craig and Michelle. And congratulations on an awesome buck!

As the opening week of our Michigan gun opener goes on, I can’t say enough about these folks. They are our volunteers, the behind the scenes folks keeping their blinds tip top for our veterans hunt. I’m so glad they enjoy not only volunteering but the outdoors as much as us. They have put a lot of work in to tag these deer and I’m so proud of them all. Good luck folks to the rest of your season! See you in December!

10 years and over 1000 vets taken out....2024 is the year I'm hanging this hat up.

In late 2014 I started taking vets out perch fishing on the ice because it was an easy thing to do and just like everything else I do in life I made it goal orientated. That goal was what seemed to be an unrealistic goal of 1000 vets taken out for a day in the outdoors, doing well basically whatever it was I was doing that day. I with the help of so many volunteers and sponsors hit that goal last year and we have been kind of running at an idle this year. Sending only 2 out after turkeys this spring compared to 9 from last year.

With that this will be our last full year, after this year we are only going to do our December deer hunt.

My kiddo hit high school and is doing so much awesome stuff and I don't wanna miss those moments and look back and think dang I shoulda been there. So its time for a slow down. and that slow down is one event, one weekend. That I can give.

Me and Dave used to brain storm crazy cool stuff we wanted to do when we got FEO off the ground and through abit of luck and determination by my whole crew we have accomplished all but one. and the ones that are close to the organization know what I'm talking about. So this is that year....Operation Iron Maiden is gonna go even if I have to push this boulder uphill myself. It was the next event in line before we lost Dave and I find it a fitting tribute to end this chapter of our lives. Grouse beware I got a lot of friends with great dogs and some vets that will hopefully connect- we will revisit this later this year .

To my board, volunteers and sponsors thank you from the bottom of my heart. It was never easy but I feel we set a standard in this industry of taking vets out, it was never about the taking of game even if I spent countless hours making sure there was a great shot or catch opportunity. It was the experience.... from the meals, to the atmosphere, to the jokes around the campfire, getting us on MOOD, the vets not having a clue till the camera was rolling. It all played into that wow factor and I couldn't have done it without you guys

To my wife thank you for never giving me to much grief as you could see how vested/addicted I was in this. You could see the impact this was having on our community, I'm forever thankful.

To Eric-El Presidente jr. we met at one of our Houghton lake trips and you immediately bought into this whole thing and have been OG1 since the beginning, lending a hand every chance you could I appreciate you buddy!

To Kim, Heather, Lee, Joe and Brandon thank you guys for stepping in when this almost fell apart.

I have had the privilege of working with so many awesome non profits and even chairing on one to help get them going in the right direction. I am confident that You the veterans are in great hands. With so many new non profits springing up each year there has never been more opportunity to get outside. So get going folks! We got more alphabet boy clubs then the government now!

We started abit of a tradition of cooking the pigs for Vets With Nets. This is gonna be our last year down there as well so stop by say high and grab a beer...Cheers folks on to the next chapter
