❤️ HE LOST HIS JOB FOR REFUSING TO GIVE UP ON A HOMELESS STUDENT — THEN HE BECAME HIS DAD
Sometimes, doing the right thing doesn’t come with a reward.
Sometimes, it costs you everything.
That’s what happened to Ohio high school principal Rob Burnside.
A student named Landerius “DeDe” Hayes was dealing with homelessness and no longer had an address that qualified him to remain enrolled at his high school.
Under the district’s rules, he was supposed to be withdrawn.
But Burnside knew what that could mean.
A teenager already facing homelessness could now lose his education, too.
So Burnside made a choice.
He kept allowing DeDe to come to school.
He made sure the young man had food.
And he continued trying to help while a longer-term solution was worked out.
The decision eventually led to an investigation. Burnside was placed on leave and later resigned from his position as principal.
But here’s where this story takes a turn that is hard to forget.
He didn’t walk away from DeDe.
Burnside and his wife, Angel, continued to be there for him. They worked with his biological mother and eventually became his legal guardians, making him a permanent part of their family.
The principal who had risked his career to make sure a homeless teenager could stay in a classroom was now looking at that same young man as his son.
And then came graduation. 🎓
Burnside wasn’t standing in the crowd watching as a principal anymore.
He was watching as a dad.
Think about that for a moment.
A young man who could have been pushed out of school because he didn’t have an address instead had someone who refused to let him fall through the cracks.
And a principal who lost his position because he wouldn’t simply follow the easiest path ended up changing a young man’s life forever.
Sometimes the most important thing you can give a child isn’t a rule, a policy or a lecture.
Sometimes it’s simply this:
“I’m not giving up on you.” ❤️
