Oly Mel Pender was one of Coach Napoleon B. Cobb's best friends. He sent me this flyer about the GALA. Oly Tommie Smith was also a friend. Coach Cobb watched him train with legendary Coach Bud Winters at Speed City/San Jose College(now University) in California. Coach Cobb spent four years at Berkley High School before coming backt o his home state Georgia.

Coach Napeleon B. Cobb with his dear friend Coach Godfrey. He called Coach Godfrey his brother from another mother. They were born on the same day and year. Coach Godfrey was the head football Coach at SWD. And Coach Cobb the Head Track Coach also the offesive coordiator in Football. They won a football state championship together in 1995. This is the two friends when Coach Cobb was inducted into the GACA/Georgia Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Coach Cobb was also in the Atlanta Track Club Hall of Fame. Coach Godfrey was in it also. They started their lifelong friendship at GHS. The two coaches became lifelong friends. They are both in Heaven now. Flying high.

Coach Napoleon B. Cobb as a Senior at TSU in Nashville. Before he started his Legendary Track and Field Coaching Career. He taught hundreds of young people how to be Champions in life through Track and Field. His career spanned 52 years until his health would no longer allow him to coach. He started at Dusable High School in Chicago straight out of college. Then went on to Berkley High in California. He had one state championship there. And then was called to come back to his home state GA. In GA he was a Head Track Coach at all of his schools. He was born and raised in Atlanta, GA. And did five years at GHS and 30 years at SWD. SWD is where he groomed Olympians Terrence Trammell and Angelo Taylor. He also had numerous All Americans. He also was the Head Track coach at Morehouse College for 14 years before coming to SWD/Soutwest DeKalb High School. He had 12 offical state championships in DeKalb Schools. And 16 unoffical. He continued to coach from films at house after retirement and his health would not longer allow him to go to the Track. Some of his devoted athletes took on the SWD program for him after he had to retire due to his health. He wanted the Legacy to continue after he passed and it has. Coach Cobb truly loved coaching Track and Field. It was his purpose in life. Peace

Coach Napoleon B. Cobb graduated from TSU in Nashville. That is where he learned a lot about coaching Track. . Oly Ralph Boston and Wilman Rudolph were his teammates. They were upper classman when he started his college experencie at TSU. He and Oly Ralph Boston became lifelong friends. Tennessee State had a great Track Culture in the 1960's. It was a great place for young prespective Track Coach to learn and grow. This pice is Coach Cobb with his Track Teammates. He is the one with the blue on his collar.

This was Coach Napoleon B. Cobb's first state Champion team in DeKalb County schools. GHS/Gordon High School was his first high school in GA. He won a Track State Championship there in 1975,1976 and 1978. He then moved on to Morehouse College before coming to SWD/Southwest DeKalb High School. He had a great run as a head Track Coach. He had a total of 12 State Championships. Numerous All Americans and two Olympians. He truly loved coaching Track and Field.

What a awesome day this was for Coach Napoleon B. Cobb's Track Legacy. Thanks so much SWD Principal;s Committee and DeKalb County School System. Coach Cobb was smiling down from Heaven at his Track Dedication. He truly loved coach Track and Field. Also, his time at SWD.

Coach Cobb's first love was Track and Field. His second was Football. Here is at his first high school in DeKalb County Schools. After GHS, he went to Morehouse College as Head Track Coach and from there to SWD/his dream school. He stayed here 30 years until he retired from coaching.
