Adams County Community Foundation (ACCF) grants to Adams Public Library System (APLS) for the Fort Wayne
Philharmonic Orchestra’s Stories in Music’ where stories and sound come together and create education and
entertainment. Philharmonic ensemble musicians bring beloved children’s books to life by providing musical
accompaniment to popular children’s books, read by a Philharmonic staff member.

Though the program’s intended audience is children, it was noted several adults enjoyed the performance as well. At
the end of the performance the Philharmonic staff member facilitates a ‘question and answer’ time where the children are able to ask the Philharmonic musicians about their instruments, the story they heard, or general music questions.

Louise Ray, ACCF BoD president, reported that the Adams County Community Foundation (ACCF) is pleased to announce that the APLS was awarded a grant in support of this community-music program. The Fort Wayne Philharmonic brought their ensemble to the Decatur Library to reach residents of Adams County. Bee Gray-Chemey, APLS staff and grant writer, added that the ensembles provided Adams County residents with an opportunity to experience a renowned orchestra performing live in their very own community. This was a popular program, and we appreciate ACCF’s support.

Dan Mawhorr, the Adams County Sheriff, attended a national Sheriff Association conference recently. There he learned about using colors in the jail setting to improve the mental health wellness of inmates and staff members. The presenter noted that when an inmate’s mental health is better in jail, then their overall health will be better. Furthermore, studies have found that there were less discipline reports, less fighting, better engagement with correctional staff members and higher morale by the entire community including staff.

Upon learning of the mental health wellness initiative, Sheriff Mawhorr set out to get grants to add wall murals to the Adams County detention center with the help of local support and artists. Familiar with the Decatur Sculpture Tour and the various artists associated with this group, Mawhorr contacted local artists Darlene Vassil and Shelby Nower to explore this new innovative approach to address mental health. Darlene, a talented artist and former art instructor, completed the first of several murals that will be created on the walls at the detention center.

The Adams County Community Foundation (ACCF) was happy to award a grant to the Adams County Sheriff Department in support of implementing the mental health initiative of wall murals. Mawhorr expressed appreciation to the ACCF on behalf of the inmates, staff, and officers for the support of wall murals. Ken Ketzler, ACCF Board member and grants committee member, added that providing assistance for this project was a popular engagement project with the grants committee.

The Adams County Community Foundation is pleased to announcew that Adams Central Community School was awarded a grant for an Eko Core Digital Stethoscope! It was brought to the attention of the ACCF, that Rylie has a hearing impairment in one ear. Rylie is in the Career Technical Education (CTE) Class to become a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA). All other students in this class have access to their personal stethoscope. Further, thanks to a grant from a local college, the CNA students get to keep their stethoscope.

However, Rylie has a specialized stethoscope adapted to her hearing impairment. A specialized stethoscope was obtained by the Bellmont School that sponsors the CNA class, but it is the property of the school.

Kara Klinker wanted to help Rylie so she could have a stethoscope as all the other CNA students. Klinker wrote a grant for this purchase. Upon learning the ACCF grant was approved, Klinker needed to get Adams Central Board approval to allow this specialized stethoscope to be used and kept by Rylie Geerken. The AC School Board promptly approved. Rylie (and Adams Central) can feel most gratified they are participating in the Universal Design as is the AWS Foundation mission.

Klinker, AC counselor, expressed her appreciation of the ACCF / AWS grant, which provided support for the specially designed stethoscope. Cathy Stucky, ACCF Grants committee co-chair, said that the ACCF and AWS are pleased to support the students with special concerns to bring all things to universal design or to participate on an ‘equal-playing field’.

This ACCF grant was made possible through unrestricted funding sponsored by the AWSF / Windswell Accessibility fund.
The AWSF / Windswell Accessibility fund supports disabled people beyond the ADA standards by promoting universal design opportunities. AWSF / Windswell Accessibility fund provides funds to organizations that provide opportunities for greater independence for individuals with disabilities.
