Join Friends of Decatur Cemetery for a Decatur Cemetery Walking Tour Sun, November 15 at 2pm. This guided walk through Decatur’s largest downtown greenspace and will visit the gravesites of notable figures from Agnes Scott College.

Agnes Scott College was established in 1889 and their mission has evolved into a commitment to educate students from around the world to “think deeply, live honorably and engage the intellectual and social challenges of their times.” This tour will walk through Agnes Scott history, Decatur history and will touch on how both the College and the City have grown together.

Meet at the Decatur Cemetery office (229 Bell St, Decatur, GA 30030). No RSVP required. Just wear comfortable shoes. We will be walking on some uneven surfaces.

Have you seen our new sign? After a long process of documentation and preparation, our application to have the Decatur Cemetery receive a local historic designation was accepted by the Historic Preservation Commission.

Now is where you can play a role. Before any chance of approval, our application needs public support. It is scheduled to be on the agenda at the Aug 18 Historic Preservation Commission meeting and then at the Sep 8 City Commission meeting. The final decision is by the City Commission and that vote should be at their meeting on Sep 28. (follow https://www.decaturga.com/calendar?boards-commissions=98 to see agendas posted or for any date changes). We would love to have anyone who is able to come to speak on behalf of this designation for the Cemetery, but if you cannot attend, please email your support to the HPC staff person, Aileen de la Torre at [email protected].

Yay! The iron work on our Cemetery wall is being repaired! Thank you, Gem City! They are making repairs from the car crash last October and replacing finials and resetting the gate.
