Costs continue to rise, and as a result, many Georgia entrepreneurs are struggling to grow their businesses. On the weekends, business owner Amanda Stevens sells sweet treats like frozen grapes and watermelon cakes to kids and families from her food trailer, Candy Lady on Wheels.

What starts with one act of service can grow into something much bigger.

After finding New Life in 2016, Debbie Mooney quickly discovered a church that didn’t just talk about caring for its neighbors – it put that care into action.

She started by packing boxes in the food pantry. Before long, she was serving families, helping in the kitchen, supporting the Warming Station, and stepping in wherever she was needed. Today, she works for New Life in the kitchen, helping with the South DeKalb Day Center at New Life and continuing her commitment to serving our neighbors.

Her story is a beautiful reminder of what can happen when you find a place to serve and simply keep showing up. 💙

You may never see how far one hour of your time can travel.

A packed food box becomes dinner on the table. A sorted rack of clothing becomes confidence for a job interview. A warm welcome becomes a reminder that someone is seen and valued.

That’s what our volunteers make possible at New Life Community Alliance.

The impact doesn’t end when a volunteer shift does. It keeps moving through families, neighborhoods, and all across South DeKalb.

To everyone who volunteered this month, thank you. You’re creating a ripple that reaches farther than you know.

Meet Brittney Lovette, one of the interns serving at the South DeKalb Day Center at New Life!

Brittney is an MSW student at Tulane University and has been interning with NLCA since January 2025. Through her experience in case management and clinical services, she’s seen firsthand the heart behind serving our South DeKalb community.

In Brittney’s words, it’s more than volunteerism, it’s “heart work.” 💙

We’re grateful to have Brittney as part of the NLCA community and excited to spotlight the people learning, growing, and serving alongside us.

You don’t have to cross the finish line to help change a life.

At NLCA’s Run to Change a Life 5K, every person who shows up matters: the runners, the walkers, the volunteers, and the people cheering from the sidelines.

Race Coordinator Naomi Seeley still remembers one participant who completed the course in a wheelchair with someone helping push him along the way. For her, it was a powerful reminder that this race isn’t about how fast you move.

It’s about choosing to show up for someone else.
