At Trellishta.org this Memorial Day, we pause to honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. Their sacrifice and courage will never be forgotten.๐Ÿ‡ฑ๐Ÿ‡ท๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ‡ฑ๐Ÿ‡ท

At Trellis, we are honored to provide garden therapy for veterans on the journey of recovery from PTSD and mild brain injury. In the garden, veterans find more than plants they discover mindfulness, grounding, new learning, accomplishment, coping skills and the support that comes from coming together with others who share similar experiences and camaraderie.

Through connection, purpose, and community, we witness strength growing every day.

As we gather with loved ones this weekend, we remember and honor those who gave everything in service to our nation. ๐Ÿ‡ฑ๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ’•๐Ÿ‡ฑ๐Ÿ‡ท

Straw bale gardening is a simple way to offer raised-bed gardening without having to purchase or build a raised bed structure. The process involves "curing" a bale of straw over several weeks to speed up the composting process by watering and fertilizing it. This process allows the straw to decompose slightly so that planting holes can be made in the top of the bale, The straw serves as a moist, nutrient-rich environment that requires only a tiny bit of soil in the planting hole. It saves space and your back!

We at Trellishta.org tried out this gardening method with our Gather & Grow group in April to see how this method could be used for a wheelchair user. Our inspiration came from the North Carolina Tomato Man, aka Craig LeHoullier, who wrote a book about the method (shown in photo above). Mr. LeHoulier's claim to fame is his book Epic Tomatoes. He is a hobby tomato breeder based in Hendersonville, NC, and shared some of his tomato seeds with Trellis for us to try. ๐Ÿ…
We also used a companion planting approach in which flowers and herbs are planted alongside the tomatoes.

The flowers attract beneficial pollinating insects, the strong-scented herbs repel pests, and the tomatoes will provide much-needed shade in summer. ๐Ÿ…๐ŸŒฟ๐ŸŒผ

Check out the growth of those strawbales after six weeks!

We love our volunteers! ๐Ÿ’š๐ŸŒฟ

Here at Trellishta.org, we truly love and admire our volunteers. From gardening and painting to assisting with programs, they are multi talented, hardworking, and incredibly generous with their time.

Sometimes we pause for a fresh picked cucumber straight from the garden ๐Ÿฅ’ and sometimes we end up laughing together over purple paint covered fingers while creating plant signs ๐Ÿ˜Š

Thank you for bringing so much energy, kindness, creativity, and joy to our community!

Plant the Future. Grow the Impact. ๐ŸŒผ

Two years ago Trellishta.org planted the seeds for something special at Decatur Legacy Park. Today the Ability Garden is blooming into a vibrant space where people of all abilities gather to connect with nature, learn new skills, and grow together.

The garden is now filled with native plants, peaceful places to pause, and a thriving community. Members tend their own plots through the Legacy Park Community Garden, and this year Trellis launched our Out in the Garden workshop series with hands on classes in gardening, horticulture, and floral design.

And the impact does not stop there.

At the Give Back Garden at Metro Transitional Center, incarcerated women are getting their hands in the soil while building confidence, learning practical skills, and preparing for the next chapter of their lives.

All of this grows because of you ๐ŸŒฟโค๏ธ

So this spring we are inviting you to dig in and join the 30K Garden Challenge. Our goal is to raise $30,000 by June 30 to keep these programs growing.

Here is how we get there.

300 people give $30 = $9,000
60 people give $300 = $18,000
3 people give $1,000 = $3,000

Together that grows into $30,000.

Every gift plants something meaningful. A new skill. A moment of connection. A place where someone can grow.

So here is the challenge. Will you plant the first seed?

Plant the Future
Grow the Impact

In addition to our incredible vegetables and pollinator plants, we have also been cultivating companion plants that help gardens thrive. ๐ŸŒฟ

You will find tomatoes, basil, and calendula that work beautifully together in the garden. Basil can help boost tomato flavor and repel pests, while calendula attracts pollinators and helps shade the soil.๐ŸŒฑ

Come browse the Sensational selection and learn more about companion planting for your own garden. We look forward to celebrating spring with you!

๐ŸŒฑ๐ŸŒผ Spring is the perfect thyme to grow your garden! ๐ŸŒผ๐ŸŒฑ

Trellis is growing plenty of beautiful flavorful herbs, vegetables, and companion plants for your garden this season. From sweet basil and holy basil to vibrant marigolds, these plants do more than look good. They are excellent companions for your vegetables and help deter harmful insects naturally.

Companion planting is a simple way to support a healthy garden while adding color, fragrance, and flavor to your space. Marigolds help protect nearby plants, and basil pairs wonderfully with vegetables like tomatoes.

These are just some of the many companion plants we have added this year, along with our usual variety of incredible herbs and vegetables.

Join us at our Spring โ€œThymeโ€ Celebration Plant Sale and pick out the perfect additions for your garden while supporting the mission of Trellishta.org

Spring-Thyme Celebration is almost here Sat April 18 11-2 pm๐ŸŒฟ๐ŸŒผ๐ŸŒฑ
This yearโ€™s Spring-Thyme Celebration and plant sale will feature a wide variety of vegetable, herbs and flowers with a special focus on the power of companion planting.

Companion planting is a natural approach to gardening where plants are thoughtfully paired to support one another. These combinations help improve soil health, deter pests, and create stronger, more resilient gardens.

All plants for sale have been organically grown with loving care by our Ability Garden program participants and nurtured by staff and volunteers in our greenhouse. All proceeds from the sale go directly to support the free programs of the Ability Garden that connect adults with disabilities to gardening and nature for better health and wellness.

This event is held in conjunction with Legacy Park Community Day. Come out and connect with local green organizations, explore environmental education, enjoy food trucks and help support the Ability Garden through your plant purchases.
Spring-Thyme Celebration & Community Day are FREE!

On a very early, cold morning in March, the Trellishta.org team gratefully met Matthew Bagen, owner and creator of Mr.Natural Superior Soil Products at the Legacy Park Community Garden to receive several thousand pounds of a custom soil mix for the community garden. Matthew went above and beyond to help Trellis staff and volunteers move the huge load into 30 large, raised garden beds.

MR. Natural Superior Soil Products are made in Dahlonega, GA, using the finest organic ingredients and are developed for maximum hearty plant growth. Mr. Natural products can be purchased in the Atlanta area from the Intown Ace Hardware in Decatur on Scott Blvd, GardenHood, and also wholesale to the trade from Saul's Nursery in Brookhaven and Alpharetta. To learn more, visit https://www.mrnaturalsoil.com

This project was made possible through a grant from foodwellalliance whose continued support of Trellis helped to launch the construction of the Ability Garden and the Legacy Park Community Garden in 2024, allowing Trellis to create these beautiful and vibrant spaces for learning and connection to nature and community. Both Food Well Alliance and Mr. Natural have been long-standing partners of Trellis, and we are grateful for the strong, collaborative community weโ€™re building together.

Lastly, a big shoutout to our incredible volunteers, whose hard work and dedication helped us get this monumental job done. We truly couldnโ€™t have done this work without you!!
