“Life Lessons from the Garden”Christy Righter, Horticultural Therapist, shares a reflection from our Thursday Gather & Grow group at Trellis. 🌱

Over the last several weeks, our Thursday Gather & Grow group has been sowing… and losing lettuce! 🥬 It seems the squirrels have discovered that our homegrown produce is irresistible.

Gardening, much like life, doesn’t always go as planned. We make progress, encounter a curveball, and have to figure out what comes next. That was the topic of discussion AND practice during our October session.

Through our time together in the garden, our little community has created space to share our struggles and strategies, our tears and our love for one another. We learned to adapt, try new approaches, and keep growing, even when things don’t go as planned.

And look at that comeback! 🌱 Our little lettuces are making a lovely return, joined by new garlic and shallots.

A note to our future selves: Netting is a must if we want to keep those squirrels out! 🐿️

A Primer on Medicinal Herbs:
a Collaboration with the Atlanta Botanical Garden 🌿🧡🌱
For almost five years, Trellis and the Atlanta Botanical Garden community outreach program have teamed up to lead a six-week series held in the spring and fall for the Ability Garden's Gather & Grow garden therapy group. Gather & Grow connects adults with spinal cord injury and MS to hands-on gardening and horticulture education. This fall, Moe Hemmings, ABG Community Outreach Manager, launched the fall series learning about medicinal herbs and their wellness benefits. We wanted to share with you the highlights from our first fall session.

Trellishta.org Gather & Grow participants created medicinal herb planters that were a joy to make and also looked spectacular! The planters contained rosemary, lemon balm, and pansies. Rosemary and lemon balm were selected for their medicinal uses and values, while pansies were included for their beauty, fall/winter bloom cycle and pollinator benefits. Both rosemary and lemon balm are easily grown in Atlanta (USDA Hardiness Zone 8A) and readily available from most plant sellers.

🌿 Explore the World of Medicinal Herbs!

Rosemary (Salvia rosmarinus) is a fragrant evergreen herb valued for its culinary uses and antioxidant properties. Traditionally used to support digestion and mental alertness, it’s a wonderful addition to any kitchen garden.

🍵 Rosemary Tea: Steep 1–2 teaspoons of fresh or dried rosemary in 1 cup of boiling water for 5–10 minutes. Strain and enjoy!

🍋 Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) is a fragrant perennial traditionally used to promote relaxation, restful sleep, and digestive comfort. Enjoy its gentle lemon scent in the garden or as an herbal tea.

Gardens invite us to explore history, cultures, and the many uses of plants. They can be places to grow food, find calm, and discover the fascinating world of medicinal herbs. 🌱

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us for Blooms & Brews! 🧡🌿

We’re thanking Mother Nature for a perfect evening, Fussin N Fightin for incredible music, and all of you for making the night so much fun. From cocktails and conversation to silent auction treasures and plenty of community spirit, Blooms & Brews was one for the books!

Together, we’ve raised $12,788 toward our $18,000 fundraising goal! We’re getting closer, and every contribution helps Trellis grow and expand our horticultural therapy programs.

🌿 Sneak Peek at more Silent Auction Items!

Here’s a peek at magnificent cyanotype botanical prints created by participants in our Art in Nature program for participants with Spinal Cord Injury, and MS. Our incredibly creative Christy Righter, Horticultural Therapist leads this wonderful group. 🌿💙🌱

Cyanotype is a photographic printing technique that uses sunlight to create beautiful blue-and-white botanical images. Participants arranged plants and botanical materials on light-sensitive fabric, exposed them to sunlight, and created these stunning botanical prints.

They are truly one-of-a-kind, and creating them was every bit as much fun as the finished pieces are beautiful! 🌿💕

Four unique prints. Four opportunities to take home a piece of Art in Nature.
