On Thursday in Gather & Grow garden therapy group, we learned how to make salsa verde with our very own Alex! 🌱💚

The ingredients made this recipe extra special. The tomatillos, hot peppers, and garlic were grown by our Gather & Grow group in the Trellishta.org ability garden this year, and the cilantro was grown by our Learning Services participants!

We added onion, lime, and salt to the mix, and Alex taught us a simple trick for bringing out the fullest flavor: broiling the tomatillos, peppers, garlic, and onion before blending them with the fresh cilantro and lime.

As Alex puts it, it was 💯!

There’s something pretty wonderful about growing food together, preparing it together, and then enjoying the fruits of our garden together. 🧡🌱

Join us Thursday, July 16, from 5:45 to 7:00 p.m. for Serenity Within, a restorative Yoga Nidra experience hosted by our neighbors at Compassionate Atlanta as part of the 2026 Legacy Self Compassion Series.

Yoga Nidra is a deeply relaxing guided meditation that helps reduce stress, restore balance, and cultivate inner peace. No experience is needed, and the session is accessible and welcoming to the wheelchair community.

This special evening benefits Trellis, so your registration supports our mission while giving you the gift of something we all need: rest.
We hope you’ll join us. 💚

We are deeply grateful to Compassionate Atlanta for selecting Trellis as the July beneficiary of this beautiful community series. Their commitment to building healthier, more compassionate communities aligns naturally with our own belief that people flourish when they feel connected, valued, and included.

We also extend our thanks to Legacy Decatur, Bliss Yoga with Cathy and Serenity Healing Arts for helping make this evening possible.

When organizations come together with a shared commitment to community well being, everyone benefits. Partnerships like these remind us that compassion grows stronger when it is shared.

We hope you will join us, invite a friend, and take this opportunity to invest in your own well being while supporting the life changing work happening every day at Trellis.

🇺🇸 Celebrate Independence by Helping It Grow. 🌱

As our nation celebrates 250 years of independence, we’re joining the national Giving 4th Movement,a reminder that one of the greatest ways to celebrate freedom is by investing in the people and communities we care about.

This year, Trellis is growing something special, a Refection Garden.

With the basic foundation of the garden now complete at Decatur Legacy Park, we’re working to raise $30,000 by September 30 to bring this space to life through our Veterans Garden Therapy Programs.

Designed primarily for veterans, the Reflection Garden will be a place where participants engage in hands-on gardening, light construction projects, creative activities, and mindful experiences that build confidence, purpose, and connection. When programs aren’t in session, the garden will also provide a peaceful space for other Trellis participants, caregivers, and the community to enjoy.

Will you help us bring this vision to life?

🌿 $30/month provides essential gardening and project supplies.

🇺🇸 $130 sponsors one veteran’s participation for a month.

🇱🇷 $500 helps complete key garden features, including handcrafted benches and decorative trellises that create a welcoming, restorative environment.

Every gift helps us cultivate independence.

🇺🇸 Happy Fourth of July from all of us at TrellisHTA.org!
As we celebrate 250 years of American independence, we’re reminded of the importance of independence in all its forms.

At Trellis, we strive to empower our participants through garden therapy and nature, supporting them as they build confidence, develop new skills, foster meaningful connections, and gain greater independence that extends beyond the garden and into everyday life.

Today, we celebrate the freedoms we share and the resilience, determination, and independence we witness in our participants every day.

Wishing you and your loved ones a safe, joyful, and meaningful Independence Day!
Happy Fourth of July!

Meet Jake Ciccone, a US Navy Veteran stationed on the John C. Stennis aircraft carrier during the Persian Gulf War. Jake shares about his experience at Trellishta.org and the powerful connection to gardening that gave him a new path towards wellness.

“Garden therapy benefited me by reminding me that things aren’t always what they appear and to keep an open mind. It really helped calm me down through grounding and getting myself back to my roots with nature. My mental health greatly improved, and my short fuse seemed to burn longer after gardening. I also felt physical relief in my shoulders and knees simply by moving them, and other veterans I’ve met have experienced relief in back pain as well.

As a man of God, I believe that the earth is the saving grace to mankind, everything from grounding and mindfulness to helping veterans learn to cultivate life instead of taking it.

Trellis has been such a pivotal part of my healing journey. In the garden, I learned to slow down. I discovered peace, purpose, and the value of staying present in growth, both in the soil and in myself. Most importantly, it helped calm my nerves and showed me that growth can come in all seasons, no matter the difficulties we face.”

As PTSD Awareness Month comes to a close, Trellishta.org proud to recognize the important role nature can play in supporting mental wellness. 🌿💚🌱

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that can develop after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. It affects thousands of veterans, and among veterans receiving VA health care, approximately 14% of men and 24% of women have been diagnosed with PTSD. PTSD can increase the risk of depression, anxiety, and su***de, making early support and connection especially important. (PTSD VA)

Led by horticultural therapist Shelly Roberts, Trellis’s Veterans Healing Garden provides small-group gardening sessions for veterans living with PTSD and other mental health challenges. Through hands-on gardening, mindfulness practices, and time spent in nature, participants build confidence, reduce stress, strengthen social connections, and experience the calming benefits of caring for living plants.

The program serves approximately 70 veterans each year through our partnerships with the VA’s Psychosocial Rehabilitation and Recovery Center (PRRC) and the SHARE Military Initiative at Shepherd Center.

At Trellis, we believe something as simple as planting a seed, tending a flower, or taking a quiet moment in the garden can foster resilience, connection, and well-being. While PTSD Awareness Month is ending, our commitment to supporting veterans continues all year long.
