Happy Labor Day! Never forget how much blood, sweat, and tears went into the labor protections we enjoy today.

We’ve come such a long way, and there’s still a lot of work to do. Get involved in your union and join the fight! Hope to see many of you in the streets today.

Labor Day is a union holiday. And here in East Tennessee, organized labor is alive and well.

Every day, Knoxville Oak Ridge Central Labor Council members are teaching our kids, building our communities, keeping the lights on, delivering our mail, protecting our neighborhoods, caring for working families, making music, making our food, moving people and goods, and fighting for a fairer workplace for everybody.

So today, I want to give some credit to the unions doing that work:

On August 20, 1866—the same day President Andrew Johnson issued a proclamation restoring habeas corpus and formally declaring the Civil War at an end—the newly organized National Labor Congress, also known as the National Labor Union, was formed.

A week later, The Evening Star reported that the union had adopted a resolution declaring that it would “never relax until a law is adopted whereby eight hours shall constitute a legal day’s work in every state of the American Union.”

That promise reflected the long, exhausting struggle behind a principle that now seems basic: workers should not have to surrender nearly every waking hour simply to earn a living. The demand for an eight-hour day was not won quickly, and it was not granted voluntarily. It required generations of organizing, strikes, public pressure, political campaigns, and workers refusing to accept that endless labor was the natural price of survival. Even then, the fight was unfinished—and in important ways, it still is. Labor rights have never been secured by a single victory; they have depended on people continuing to organize, persist, and refuse to “relax” when fairness remains out of reach.

Local 437 member Corey Taylor was involved in a serious car wreck on his way to work earlier this week. He was on a back road, and a car was coming at him head-on. He swerved to miss the car and lost control of his vehicle. The other vehicle fled the scene. The vehicle he was driving has been totaled, and Corey was taken to a local ER, where they told him his injuries were complex for them. So he was transported to UT Medical Trauma Center. He had to undergo emergency surgery to repair his spleen and spent a few days in the Trauma ICU. He has since been released, but cannot return to work for a few weeks. Your donations will help cover medical expenses and general income loss from him not being able to return to work. He has 3 young daughters, and all support helps tremendously!
