We're traveling across the pond this Tuesday!

Although based in the American state of Georgia, AF is proud to be an international organization offering flexible virtual courses to engage learners with researchers and professionals around the world! They include Virtual Education Coordinator Boris Berlijn, who found this Common Frog (Rana temporaria) during one of his field biology class's weekly excursions into the natural reserves of the Netherlands!

Holy Mole-y!

It's almost here--the mole-iest time of the year! From October 22 through October 28, AF's annual virtual will highlight Family Ambystomatidae (colloquially known as Mole Salamanders)! Endemic to North America, they inspire much of our conservation work (Frosties, anyone?) and we look forward to celebrating this family of astounding--and adorable--creatures! Mimic Monday!

The Mimic Poison Frog (Ranitomeya imitator) displays a unique relationship dynamic within the rainchamber: monogamy! Individual parental care, such as female Marbled Salamander (Ambystoma opacum) egg guarding, is observed within all three groups of amphibians (Frogs, Salamanders, and Caecilians), but knowledge of biparental care is restricted. Native to eastern Peru, both males and females of this species exhibit parental care for the successive batches of tadpoles they produce together. Males guard the leaf and tree pools they develop in from predators, while females return periodically to lay unfertilized eggs for mealtimes!

AF has spent the past decade working tirelessly with partner organizations across the American Southeast to perform the necessary laboratory and conservation work to save the Frosted Flatwoods Salamander (Ambystoma cingulatum) from extinction. Our course was developed for learners 18+ eager to learn about Frosties and other regional treasures! Rough-skinned Newts (Taricha granulosa) aren't your defenseless snack! Don't let the meme-worthy expression fool you--these cute caudates secrete a deadly neurotoxin called tetrodotoxin (TTX). TTX works by binding to certain channels within nerve cells, preventing sodium ions from flowing within them and blocking signals from other cells to react to stimuli. This communication breakdown leads to eventual death through asphyxiation--not a fun time by any species' standards!

AF recently received a donation of some truly minute Laos Warty Newts (Laotriton laoensis). Like the rest of our over 1,000 resident individual amphibians and reptiles, they'll be treated to the best in data-backed captive care!
