We have spoken with Decatur Fire and Rescue - DFR about their specific needs, to fill the gap left by the city funding ONLY WATER in their budget! You might be surprised about the specific needs, and what is NOT needed, so please check out the post.

City of Decatur, Alabama - Government, this post is Positively Tone Deaf! You refuse to allocate any funding to Hands Across Decatur, yet you promote their service to our community when it is advantageous for you. This is insanity. Sue Terrell and HAD supporters have pleaded year after year for modest funding. 10% of the cost for pickleball/tennis potties. Less than half the cost of the Positively Decatur campaign.
Let’s stop the superfluous spending and fairytales. Let’s support one of the most impactful nonprofits in Decatur, that is operating on pure grit, resilience and dedication. Nowhere will you find a more lean, agile and worthy organization to support with funding. We must set better priorities.

SATURDAY 8/26 FROM 11-2.
Lunch served 11-12.

On Saturday, Notre Dame vs Navy football game will be on. Again, Sue says “YOU MUST CHEER FOR OL’ NOTRE DAME”. 😎
Rob will show a bit of love for Navy 🤗

Also on Saturday, HAD’s friends from “Ice Cream On Wheels” will be serving special refreshing ice cream treats for guests. Thank you Ice Cream On Wheels.

If anyone would like to drop off some snacks or water at HAD that would be more than welcome and very appreciated.

This is a public meeting hosted by myself for the citizens in my district and any other in the city who would like to come and address any issues about the city, our district or just have a talk about the future of our city. EDIT: SINCE POSTING THIS ROLLING BLACKOUTS HAVE STARTED!
City of Decatur, Alabama - Government, growth before infrastructure is a recipe for disaster. The question of power grid resilience and capacity has been raised repeatedly at rezoning votes to increase density. These questions are continually dismissed.
When we face power outages, due to hundreds of apartments, townhomes and zero lot line patio homes crammed onto lots, citizens will remember that infrastructure was not seriously considered when rezoning was granted. The risks are arguably greatest for the outer reaches of power infrastructure, such as 2900 Upper River Road.
There will be more frigid winter weeks and many more sheltering summer days before we get our say again in 2025.
In addition to power supply, we have questions about water/sewer/storm management, road capacity, lack of multimodal access, crime control, fire and first responder capacity, to name a few infrastructure issues.
The damage that can be done in the next three years will be irreversible if we don’t focus on infrastructure to support growth. We implore you to take our questions seriously before the 2025 election!

While TVA cancelled its call for rolling power interruptions, the request for VOLUNTARY power conservation remains in effect until further notice.

Measures you can take to help conserve power are:

Lowering thermostats by just one or two degrees makes a big difference in the demand for electricity needed for heating homes and businesses. Use layered clothing, blankets and other measures to increase comfort. Ceiling fans should be set to CLOCKWISE rotation to keep warm air circulating.

Delay using washing machines, dryers, dishwashers and high-energy-use appliances until later on Saturday afternoon.

Keep window covering closed on the non-sunny side of homes but open them if bright sunlight is available to provide additional heat.

This request is expected to remain in effect through Saturday. However, TVA is closely monitoring the situation. DU will make additional posts to social media and notify local news outlets with updates as they are received.

Hands Across Decatur (HAD) shared more about the amazing service they provide to our city. Did you know HAD receives NO support from city, county, state or federal government? Why has NO FUNDING been provided to the only delegated 501(c)3 homeless organization/advocacy in Morgan County, Limestone County and Lawrence County? Decatur has a department dedicated to pursuing grants; why hasn’t there been any effort to fund HAD? Their Community Center serves hundreds in need weekly; HAD needs and deserves support.

HAD will provide hot meals throughout the holidays including Christmas Day!

HAD also needs volunteers to help provide hot meals and other services.
They are open 8-1 (earlier/later hours if weather advisory) Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday; open 8:30-1 Wednesday and Friday typically closed. They feed hot lunch Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday 11-12. HAD serves between 150 and 240 hot meals per week. They offer hot showers Monday-Thursday and laundry service Tuesday and Thursday.

—pop top cans of bean-less chili, spaghetti/ravioli, potted meat, tuna/chicken, etc
—water flavoring
—Gatorade
—slim jims and other high protein snacks

HAD provides ~280 sack lunches to go each week and ~200 weekly food bags!

Workshop to focus on nonprofits and city government involvement

A Citizens Action Workshop on subjects including nonprofits, filing ethics complaints and citizens’ awareness will be held Wednesday at the Princess Theatre Center for the Performing Arts.
The 4:45 p.m. meeting sponsored by 1DUCK (OneDecatur United Citizens Kaizen) citizens involvement group will be held on the theater’s mezzanine and last about two hours.

There will be multiple information tables with information on how to drive change. These include a table to help nonprofits help those with urgent needs during the holidays and throughout the winter months.
There will be information on filing complaints with the Alabama Ethics Commission, ways to monitor agendas of the City Council, Planning Commission and Board of Zoning Adjustments, an update on the zoning rewrite and advice on dealing with City Hall and the City Council.

Also learn about HAD volunteer opportunities, beyond the holidays, at the Warming Center that opened last year. As Executive Director explained to WAFF in January, “We forget that the homeless and hungry don’t just happen at Christmas. It happens all year long. It is 24/7, 365 people are unhoused and hungry. We need assistance during the entire year because we are run by the community.”
