In August 1979, a one person office was opened in the International Institute in Detroit to serve a unique population of immigrants. In its first year, 421 clients sought ACC’s services and within ten years ACC opened an additional 12 outreach centers throughout Metropolitan Detroit, serving over 5,000 clients. As ACC expands so did its services, providing counseling, healthcare, employment traini

ng and job placement, translation, interpretation, immigration and youth services. In 1991, ACC received accolades as the first Arab American organization to receive national recognition by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Services (CARF) for services provided by its behavioral health program. In 1992, ACC’s clients nearly doubled from 19,000 to 38,000 as refugees and asylum seekers of the Gulf War crisis continued to escape and settle in Michigan. In 1995 ACC committed itself to the revitalization of the 7 Mile neighborhood and community as we launched the 7 Mile Project; by 1997 we had built a brand new facility that not only provided ACC’s general services, but we also provided a facility that the public could use to host meetings, as well as a community health clinic that serves the local neighborhoods’ uninsured and under-insured population. The 7 Mile project has become a stimulus for an entire neighborhood and indeed the City of Detroit too, as we have become part of the City’s Community & Neighborhood Development Initiative.

The NBA Finals has everyone talking…so we at ACC turned a few jump shots into a lesson on finding the right partner.

ACC Michigan welcomed Oakland County leaders recently for a tour with CEO Odie Fakhouri, including a stop inside the ACC Gym.

One guest, Oakland County Deputy County Executive Madiha Tariq, took on a simple challenge: Make one shot from the lower block. It took several tries — but every miss made the final shot even better.

And for ACC, that’s the bigger message behind partnership:

You keep showing up. You stay with it. You build with purpose. And eventually, the right shot falls.

to our Men’s Mental Health Workshop this April! The workshop was focused on breaking stigma and creating a safe space for honest conversations about mental health, healing, and challenges men often face in silence.

As we recognize Men’s Mental Health Month, we’re reminded that seeking support is a sign of strength, not weakness. ACC will help anyone and everyone feel empowered to speak up, connect, and prioritize their mental health. Go to myacc.org to get the help you need.

ACC was honored to support the next generation of leaders by sponsoring $20,000 in scholarships to the American Jordanian Women Association of Michigan for 11 deserving students at this year’s Jordan Independence Day celebration.

Today, we mourn the loss of a valued colleague, leader, and friend.

Dr. Abid Abdullah dedicated 30 years of service to ACC, faithfully helping immigrants, refugees, and Oakland County residents build brighter futures through employment, education, and opportunity.

His commitment to empowering others reflected the very heart of ACC’s mission and left a lasting impact on countless individuals, families, colleagues, and community members.

We are deeply grateful for his decades of service, compassion, and leadership. His legacy will continue to live on through the lives he touched and the pathways he helped create for others.

Please join us in keeping Dr. Abid Abdullah’s family, loved ones, and all who knew him in your thoughts and prayers.

May he rest in peace.

The leading childbirth complication today is maternal mental health disorders, including postpartum depression, PTSD, and OCD. These conditions are also a leading cause of pregnancy-related deaths. If 1 in 5 women in the United States experience maternal mental health disorders after birth, why does no one talk about them?

That’s why we want to inform you about the range of mental health challenges mothers can face, how to recognize the signs, and where to seek support. And to all the moms out there: you are not a “bad mom” for feeling the way you do. Postpartum depression, anxiety, and rage are more common than many people realize, and help is available.

This volume is dedicated to Maternal Mental Health and how we can better support mothers everywhere💙

Today on World Hunger Day, ACC recognizes the growing need for accessible food resources in our community and the importance of coming together to fight hunger.

The ACC Marketplace serves fresh and nutritious food to approximately 500 unique families each week, a reminder that hunger remains a reality for many in our community. Together, through compassion, partnership, and support, at ACC we ensure that everybody eats.💙

ACC was proud to sponsor the Jordanian American Heritage Association’s (JAHA) Jordan Independence Day Celebration last Saturday. It was an honor to join Michigan’s Jordanian American community in celebrating 80 years of Jordanian Independence with culture, community, and joy. 🇯🇴✨

Our CEO and Honorary Consul of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan in Michigan, the Hon. Odie Fakhouri, also shared his commitment to support all Jordanian Americans in Michigan in his new role. He also shared dates of a Consulate Grand Opening will be coming soon
