America's Community Council - ACC Providing core human needs to all people.

In August 1979, a one person office was opened in the International Institute in Detroit to serve a unique population of immigrants. In its first year, 421 clients sought ACC’s services and within ten years ACC opened an additional 12 outreach centers throughout Metropolitan Detroit, serving over 5,000 clients. As ACC expands so did its services, providing counseling, healthcare, employment traini

ng and job placement, translation, interpretation, immigration and youth services. In 1991, ACC received accolades as the first Arab American organization to receive national recognition by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Services (CARF) for services provided by its behavioral health program. In 1992, ACC’s clients nearly doubled from 19,000 to 38,000 as refugees and asylum seekers of the Gulf War crisis continued to escape and settle in Michigan. In 1995 ACC committed itself to the revitalization of the 7 Mile neighborhood and community as we launched the 7 Mile Project; by 1997 we had built a brand new facility that not only provided ACC’s general services, but we also provided a facility that the public could use to host meetings, as well as a community health clinic that serves the local neighborhoods’ uninsured and under-insured population. The 7 Mile project has become a stimulus for an entire neighborhood and indeed the City of Detroit too, as we have become part of the City’s Community & Neighborhood Development Initiative.

Due to the severe weather conditions impacting our area, and out of an abundance of caution for the safety of our guests, honorees, partners, and staff, ACC’s 47th Annual Celebration scheduled for this evening, Thursday, September 3, has been reschedule.

While we are incredibly disappointed that we will not be able to gather together this evening, the safety and well-being of everyone attending is our highest priority.

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this unexpected change may cause and are grateful for your understanding. We will share additional information regarding next steps as soon as it becomes available.

Yesterday, we welcomed Dearborn Mayor Abdullah Hammoud, Michigan Representative Alabas Farhat, ACC Board Member Dannis Mitchell, Tonya Brewer of the Building Material Group and Project Manager Kim Tandy of the City of Detroit Planning and Development to the Village of Haifa.💙🏘

ACC CEO Odie Fakhouri took them around the Village of Haifa. During the tour, they explored the latest developments of the Village and learned our vision of bringing essential services within one connected community. From behavioral health, primary care, family services and affordable and dependable housing to our Marketplace, Youth Development Center and the pharmacy, the Village of Haifa is designed to break down barriers and create a more accessible, integrated human services experience.

ACC is proud to present our 2026 Community Empowerment Award to Detroit District 3 Councilman Scott Benson in recognition of his commitment to strengthening Detroit neighborhoods and improving the quality of life for the people he serves. He has made economic opportunities, public safety, neighborhood revitalization and community development central to his work, while providing unprecedented availability and accessibility to his constituents.

With more than 17 years of experience in community development, Councilman Benson has helped advance efforts to address blight, remove thousands of deteriorated properties and safety hazards to create stronger and more stable neighborhoods. He also brings 24 years of military services with the United States Coast Guard, where he attained the rank of Commander and completed two overseas deployments.

Councilman Benson has been a steadfast partner to ACC throughout the planning and development of the Village of Haifa. He has helped ensure ACC community development efforts and successful with a positive and enabling local government partner.

ACC is proud to present our 2026 Voice of Justice Award to Mr. Hussein Hachem, CEO of What’s Up Media for his commitment to the truth and to those whose voices are too often overlooked. Through informing, connecting and empowering on his platform, he has become a trusted voice that people in his community turn to. Hussein has also become their voice as he shines a spotlight on unaddressed issues that impact the Arab American community. He has dedicated countless nights and weekends to make exciting events such as the World Cup more accessible to the communities we both serve and love.

Hussein Hachem became an entrepreneur, media executive and community leader committed to advancing education, civic engagement and the voices of the Arab American community because of the knowledge gap he himself faced when he first immigrated to the United States. As Founder and CEO of What’s Up Media, he has built one of the nation’s leading Arabic-language digital media platforms, delivering trusted news, community stories and cultural programming to millions.

In addition to his media work, Hussein founded EduCare Student Services and Educare4All to expand educational opportunities and support youth success. He also serves as Chairman of the Dearborn Education Foundation, championing educational excellence and community investment.

7 Mile, stand up! ACC is proud to announce that our 2026 Alumni Award goes to Darius “5” Acuff Jr., who by his own words was raised in the ACC Gym, and drafted 7th overall in the National Basketball Association (NBA) 2026 Draft to the Sacramento Kings. His extraordinary achievements have inspired Detroit’s next generation to dream big, work hard and reach their full potential.

Darius is one of Detroit's brightest basketball stars and a proud alumnus of America's Community Council's youth programs. His journey from ACC’s gym to the national spotlight began at Cass Technical High school, where he led his team to a Michigan state championship. He continued to make waves at IMG Academy as a five-star recruit, McDonald’s All-American and FIBA Under-18 AmeriCup MVP.

In 2024, Darius made a full-circle moment in the ACC gym, announcing his commitment to the University of Arkansas. He went on to earn SEC Player of the Year, SEC Freshman of the Year, Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year, and Consensus First Team All-American honors.
