Lights, Sirens, and Litigation: What an Ambulance Ride-Along Reminded Me About Practicing Law

About a year ago, I wrote about my trip to the morgue. This time around, my desire to know more about the world of my clients led me to an ambulance ride-along. It was fascinating. I started the day off by observing a mass casualty incident training session and then waited for calls. When the Waiver Meets the Wake

I knew I was in trouble when the boat started climbing waves like it was trying to get over a speed bump made by God. This was supposed to be a peaceful whale-watching trip in San Diego: sunshine, ocean air, maybe dolphins, maybe whales. Instead, a few minutes after we left the dock, the water turned rough. The boat started hitting the waves hard enough that conversation faded....

Law As An Art Form: What the SAMA Illuminated In Me

Housed in a century-old brewery building, the San Antonio Museum of Art (SAMA) rests on Jones Avenue in downtown San Antonio. The galleries are quiet, well-lit, and organized - like most art museums - by artistic period and global origin. I confess to having skipped out on the breakfast mixer the first day in order to go see what San Antonio had to offer in terms of art....

Texas Ends Its Reliance on the ABA for Law-School Approval

Although the 2026 American Bar Association (ABA) Midyear Conference was held in San Antonio this year, the event included an elephant in the room the size of the Lone Star state. While the YLD delegation considered questions about the adoption of the NextGen Bar Exam debuting in July 2026 into law schools’ curriculums, there was little-to-no discussion about a recent decision from the Texas Supreme Court that ended the requirement of ABA accreditation for the practice of law in Texas....

Short Term Rentals in Michigan: Where the Law Really Stands

Airbnb has changed how people use their homes. A spare room in Detroit or a cottage in Traverse City can turn into quick income. But in Michigan, the law hasn’t rolled out a welcome mat for short-term rentals. Zoning RulesMichigan courts see zoning as a local matter. In Reaume v. Township of Spring Lake (2019), the Court of Appeals upheld a township’s decision to shut down short-term rentals in single-family districts....
