🌎The personal and global impact of international missionary work was the topic of discussion as Rotary Club of Dearborn members welcomed guest speaker Fr. Matthew Ippel, SJ, on January 22.
✨Fr. Matthew grew up in Dearborn Heights and was recently ordained as a Jesuit priest. He worked with families in Honduras as a student and most recently was assigned to South Sudan as part of Jesuit Refugees Services (JRS). JRS provides education, psycho-social services, livelihood skill building services and disability services to over a million refugees in 57 countries.
✨In South Sudan there are four large camps with over 200,000 refugees. Fr. Matthew shared the story of a young boy who died for lack of basic medicine that could have saved his life. He also told a story of a tribal leader who invited Fr. Matthew into his house out of the rain and washed his clothes as a hospitality.
✨The need for basic survival resources grows every day while available resources dwindle due to lack of international support.
✨Individual donations to Jesuit Refugee Services can be made at their website www.jrsusa.org.
