Four weeks ago, I brought my 68-year-old father with dementia to live with us in our home. He had been diagnosed two years earlier, but his condition had progressed to the point where he couldn't recognize our faces. We were terrified when he wandered 6 kilometers away from home and couldn't remember how to get back. We felt confused, scared, and helpless. However, a friend of mine introduced me to a new memory-improvement technique, and we decided to give it a try. To our amazement, my father's dementia has disappeared, and it's been a joy to see him interacting with my daughter once again.

Thank you to Karen, for sharing her poem ‘My wish for home’. ⁣

Karen says: “The poem really comes from my experience of working for many years with people with dementia as part of my job in a social care setting,
and dealing with Best Interests Decisions on a daily basis. ⁣

Most people would say they wanted to be at home and I just wanted to reflect their voices and wishes, and some of the dilemmas.”

Billy is part of a year 6 class that recently had some discussions about dementia and worked through Dementia Friends resources.
We’re told the children’s response was fantastic, showing respect and empathy.⁣
⁣After some discussion, the class wrote some poems, and today we’re sharing Billy’s. ⁣
⁣The poem highlights how a lack of understanding and patience from others can add to the anxiety
and frustration those living with dementia may feel when going about everyday tasks.⁣
⁣A little understanding and patience go a long way!

“Many of my social media followers are South Asian women, and to be able to help break down the taboos around dementia
in our community is really important to me. I’m blessed to be able to honor my Nani in this way.” ⁣

Being a Dementia Friend means being there for everyone affected by dementia. If you know someone who
might be experiencing loneliness, why not reach out – a simple text or call, or a cup of tea and a chat could make all the difference.

Kelly’s mum, Barbara, is living with later-stage Alzheimer’s disease,
following a diagnosis five years ago. And this year Kelly, from Hertfordshire,
will take on her third Trek26 by tackling the South Devon Coast, through woods, over cliffs, and along beaches.⁣

‘The Trek26 events have also been vitally important as an opportunity to meet a community of like-minded people ,
We've made life-long friends already ."

If you have dementia or are living with someone who has dementia - there are some simple things you can do around the home to help you feel safe and to support independence. ⁣

✅ Be clutter free – keep things simple and remove unnecessary items from cupboards and drawers so that the things you use regularly are easy to find.⁣

✅ Look out for hazards – remove anything that may cause you to trip (such as rugs or cables).⁣

✅ Rest – make sure you have quiet, comfortable places to rest and if you use a garden make sure there are benches.⁣

✅ Do the things you enjoy - larger faced clocks, calendars and white boards can help you keep track of events or to-do lists.⁣

✅ Use signage – you may find it helpful to use signs on doors for each room, or label cupboards and items.⁣

What are some changes you have made that help you feel happy and safe around the home?

Too many people affected by dementia feel that society fails to understand the condition they live with, often resulting in loneliness and social isolation.
⁣Reach out to someone by text, pop around for a cup of tea and a chat, send something in the post to let someone know you’re thinking of them, or strike up a conversation with someone who looks lonely.

A simple yet impactful quote from Dementia Friend Tamsin today. As dementia progresses, you may see changes in a person’s behaviour.
Family roles and relationships may change, and this can be challenging. ⁣
⁣Tamsin told us something important she has learnt about dementia is that through all this, love remains.⁣

‘I want to go home’⁣
⁣It’s not uncommon to hear someone with dementia who lives in residential care to say these words, and they can be difficult to hear.⁣
⁣It can help to avoid arguing about whether they are already home, to divert conversation and to reassure someone that they are safe.⁣
