Deal Island Peninsula Partnership

Deal Island Peninsula Partnership A collaborative initiative dedicated to building community and environmental resilience to coastal flooding, erosion, and other environmental changes.

The University of Maryland and the Chesapeake
Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve in Maryland (CBNERR-MD) have partnered with Deal Island Peninsula communities, government and
non-governmental organizations, local and regional
decision-makers, managers, and scientists to increase the resilience of coastal habitats and communities in the face of flooding, erosion, storms, and other changes. Wh

y This Project? The Deal Island Peninsula has tremendous natural
and cultural wealth but is vulnerable to storms and flooding due in large part to low elevation. The goal of this project is to increase the resilience of the communities and habitats of the Peninsula to coastal storms, sea-level rise, flooding, erosion, and associated threats. We are working with a wide range of stakeholders to develop, assess,
and implement restoration, adaptation, and other options to increase resilience.

Sharing this opportunity to join a discussion on resilience in coastal agricultural communities with UMES and the Community Agricultural Resilience through extension (CARE) Project.
"What happens when a season of drought dries up fields, when flooding washes out roads, or when saltwater creeps into farmland? These disruptions don’t just affect crops—they ripple through the whole community. At this listening session, we will explore how farmers, families, and communities across Maryland deal with extreme weather."

We want to know how our neighbors and local farms are dealing with extreme weather. Join the Community Agricultural Resilience through extension (CARE) Project and University of Maryland Eastern Shore Extension for a listening session, 9-11 a.m., April 21, at the UMES Research, Extension and Teaching Farm in Princess Anne. Sharing an opportunity to share your vision with Somerset County Technical and Community Services. They are starting the process of updating Somerset County's comprehensive plan. This process is overseen by the Somerset County Planning Commission.

They will be hosting a public workshop tonight at the Civic Center (see flyer).

If you can't make it to the workshop, check out the planning page to fill out a 15 minute survey where you can share thoughts.

Starting Wednesday, January 31st, expect to see increased construction traffic as crews work to remove the remaining pieces of dredge pipeline from the Wicomico River dredge placement project. It should take about two to three weeks. More details are posted on the DIPP website:

While DIPP is not a sponsor of the project, we are doing our best to use our network to stay up-to-date on the project and communicate that information. We will keep this page up-to-date, with the latest news on the Maintenance Dredging Projects and the impacts you will see.

We've posted some new photos of the dredge placement site at the end of Riley Roberts Road to our website.

Photos include some taken via a drone where you can see the dredge placement, the pipe running along the marsh, and the straw bale containment.

We also have photos from a field trip with the various organizations and agencies involved in the project which DIPP was able to send a representative to. We shared these in our December newsletter, but they are live on our website too.
