The Story Begins
What was just an idea in founder Caroline Estes’s head became a reality after months of searching for the perfect place. Alast, Alpha Farm, Deadwood, Oregon. What was a family farm originalily operated by “the Swanson’s” is now an intentional community or “hippie community” in its most basic terms. In the 1960’s intention community’s were sprouting all over the us and a new movement was growing. The movement to move back to the land and live sustainability In peace with the ones you love. In a scary time of war and uncertainty Alpha was born. In 1972 they broke the ground and worked hard to build a garden with very little money. By eating canned foods and all 12 members sleeping in the one small warm room in the house they eventually were able to pull through. They bought a local Mail contract from a man who used to do it for over 30 years and they finally earned a steady form of income eventually gathering enough money to buy a local restraunt they then named the “Alpha Bit Cafe”. It wasnt a huge income but on top of the mail contract it was helping a lot. The Alpha Bit became a true staple in Lane county but eventually shut down in 2015 after 45 years of service to the community. With nobody to work at the cafe they had no other choice. For a while Alpha was dormant and saw few visitors, with just Caroline and just a couple other people it seemed that the years of Alpha were coming to an end. But in 2018 things to the better turn. Alpha gained a book keeper and a few farm hands and things were going well. Since writing in 2-24-2020 there are 12 people at Alpha and life here is pretty steady. We are constantly working on improving our life’s here and how we can live more sustainability. It feels good to be sustainability. Don’t you agree? send us an email or give us a call. We would love to help you schedule a visit and tell you more about the Alpha story!
