Play ball! ⚾️

On October 19, 1922, Babe Ruth came to Deadwood as part of his barnstorming tour. The Deadwood Amusement Park was filled with over a thousand people, eagerly waiting to see Ruth hit a home run. Babe Ruth played with the Deadwood team, while Bob Muesel played for the All-Star team rostered from the best players from the five other teams in the Black Hills League. The Deadwood team won 4-2. However, spectators left disappointed, Babe Ruth did not hit a home run.

This cotton handkerchief, featuring bears enjoying a picnic, was given as a gift to Lead resident Mrs. E. A. Steinbeck in June 1954. Objects like this reflect the growing public awareness campaigns of the 1950s that encouraged families to enjoy the outdoors while helping protect forests from fire.
