STEM Fans, I am planning a few events during Spring break from March 23rd to March 30th. These include a soldering event, a microscope event (Look at the little things and learn how to make a slide), and making an electromotor and electromagnet. Do we have your interest?

Currently, our events page page has two events.

If you sign up for multiple events during Spring Break, I will provide a discount.

Example: Soldering, Microscope and Motor = $38. You pay as you go, and when you hit the third event you only pay $8

Looking for a great tutor and dedicated teacher, Amy's Amy’s Schoolhouse is where your child can get academic help.

My name is Amy Peura, and I am the owner of Amy’s Schoolhouse.

Education: I have a Master’s degree, an ESL endorsement, and I’ve been taking college math classes to refresh my upper level math skills.

Experience: I taught for the public school system for over 12 years: I taught 4th grade in Lincolnton, NC, and I spent most of my years in D428, teaching grades K, 1, and 3.

Time for a Change: my brother died, I turned 40, and my son was starting kindergarten. My whole perspective on life changed. I was ready to alter my career path. I left the school district and opened a school in my house for a year. I transitioned to tutoring students and I started my own business: Amy’s Schoolhouse was born. In addition to tutoring students, I also homeschool my son, who is in first grade this year.

Location: For about a year, I rented tutoring space at EdUcate in Sycamore. While I was there, I learned the ropes of owning a tutoring business. I was ready to “come home” and bring my business office to DeKalb.

My tutoring office is now located on the edge of downtown DeKalb, located at 122 N. 1st St. I love being a part of the downtown community.

I tutor a wide range of ages. I work with kindergarten and first grade students on phonics, reading, and writing. My second through fifth graders generally work on both reading and math. Every middle and high school student I have are seeking tutoring in math.

I don’t like the idea of a waiting list, so I started hiring my teacher friends as independent tutors. This has morphed into a matchmaking project for me, matching students’ needs with tutors’ skills & schedules. My goal is to help DeKalb students receive the best education from the best teachers.

One-on-One Tutoring: Subjects include math, phonics, spelling, reading, writing, science, Spanish. Ages range from Pre-K to adult. If you’re interested in learning a special subject, I may have a tutor for you.

Small Group Classes: There are periodic small group classes offered during the school year, including Spanish & kindergarten readiness. Summer time will be full of a variety of small classes, in addition to our traditional one-on-one tutoring.

DeKalb STEM would like to thank 🍎Amys School House🍎 for allowing us to host our banana DNA event at her new location. We hope the kids had fun learning about DNA🧬 and how it can be used in the real world.
