De Queen Non-Profit Donates to Spanish Spelling Bee in Celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month

DE QUEEN, AR— An inclusive group in Southwest Arkansas has provided Sponsorship of the Central Arkansas Spanish Spelling Bee this Hispanic Heritage month.

MAC is a De Queen-based non-profit organization with a focus on diversity and inclusion that formed in 2020. The group has initiated local programs and projects throughout Southwest Arkansas in recent years, including the commissioning of community artwork, hosting a black history month celebration, sponsoring foster care children, support of the E. A Edwards Street Dedication, and many local community initiatives.

For their latest outreach effort, MAC has teamed up with LaTasha Moore of "Tasha Teaches Spanish" for sponsorship of the state's Spanish spelling Bee. It is the only Spanish spelling competition in Arkansas, and the purpose of this event is to encourage students in 4th-8th grade to practice use of the Spanish language while embracing Hispanic culture.

Last year, the inaugural competition had 4 participants, and registration for this year's Bee has more than tripled with 15 students registered to compete.

Though the event is titled the "Central Arkansas Spanish Spelling Bee," program organizers welcome students from all over the state to participate. As the city of De Queen has an estimated Hispanic population of more than 60%, MAC members have supported this event in hopes that students from the De Queen area will participate in the future and represent the Southwestern Region of Arkansas.

All funds donated to the Spanish spelling Bee go to the planning of the event, as well as providing funding to send the state winner to the national competition in 2023.

MAC and event organizers would like to express appreciation to all who advocate for the Spanish language across the natural state and support this educational opportunity for Arkansas youth.

The Central Arkansas Spanish Spelling Bee will be held Saturday, October 22nd, 2022, at 9:00 am at Plaza Frida, 4001 West 65th Street, Little Rock, Arkansas, 72209.

"Tasha Teaches Spanish" provides translation services, language education programs, and community partnership opportunities. The company was named as a finalist for the Little Rock Regional Chamber's 2022 Minority Business of The Year award. Thank you so much to everyone who came out to celebrate the life and legacy of Superintendent E.A Edwards at Lewis Temple Church this morning!
With a musical performance, prayer, proclamation, balloon release and street dedication, the love of community was present in De Queen today.

May we remember the words of this beloved community leader with each passing day and know that "everybody is somebody" here in Southwest Arkansas.

Thank you to Lewis Temple and the city of De Queen for helping make this possible.

My name is Veronica Ozura, and I am excited to announce that I have filed and will be running for Quorum Court Justice of the Peace for District 1.

Although I was born in Little Rock, AR, I am a lifelong resident of De Queen and a 2006 De Queen High School graduate. I received a bachelor’s degree from Arkansas Tech University in both Psychology and Sociology. I have obtained 2 master’s degrees. The first Master’s degree is from the University of Central Arkansas in School Counseling, and a second master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health from Texas A&M University – Texarkana.
After completing my bachelor’s degrees in 2010, I was able to assist Sevier County and the surrounding communities through my advocacy role at Southwest Arkansas Domestic Violence Center. I organized Domestic Violence response task force teams in 5 Southwest Arkansas counties. This was an essential key in our community, as I was able to bring law enforcement, medical professionals, prosecuting attorneys, and other key response members together in order to efficiently respond to victims and improve communication between agencies. In 2012, I transitioned job roles to UA Cossatot as a Career Specialist, assisting those in our community that wanted to further their education past high school, whether it be trade school, certification, or obtaining an associate degree. In this role, I realized there was a gap in those that wanted to pursue higher education and the understanding on how to approach it from the high school level. This inspired me to take on the role of Career Coach at both Horatio and De Queen Schools, which I did from 2013 to 2020. Being a Career Coach allowed me to network with several local businesses, community organizations, local professionals and higher education institutions in order to better aid students and families in aligning their passions to careers. After completing my first master’s degree, I saw the need in helping the community at a greater capacity through school counseling and accepted my current position as a High School Counselor for the Horatio School District. In this role, I can assist students and their families with current academic understandings, address social emotional hardships, and in turn aid in the building of a better and stronger community here in Southwest Arkansas.

I look forward to the possibility of being able to serve my community in a different capacity. I believe that my roles throughout the years in a variety of settings has allowed me to develop exceptional skills in aiding in growth and fair representation to all the citizens of Sevier County.
