Summer of 12

Summer of 12 A child-driven volunteer project designed to teach school aged children the power of a "service to others" lifestyle.

During the 12 weeks that kids are off from school for summer break, they will be offering their volunteer time for a morning or afternoon to 12 different local organizations or non-profits. They also will be creating a journal or blog to detail their work and hope to inspire their fellow students to seek out ways to help in the community.

Summer of 12 kids wrap up 81 hours of volunteer service at the DeForest Community and Senior Center today - serving lunch and calling Bingo. As the summer of 2012 comes to a close and kids head back to school, Stacey and I thank all the kids and parents who contributed so much to the success of our second year serving the community. We have logged in a total of 360 hours of kid power! You should be very proud of yourselves and the difference you have made for many people and organizations! Stay tuned for news of several off season volunteer opportunities including our second annual Free Community Book Exchange this December.

Just a handful of the 46 kids who have volunteered in and around DeForest this summer posing with our volunteer friend and inspiration Drew Johnson. 248 hours of volunteer service at the halfway point of summer break. You should be proud of yourselves!

I received a call this morning from my inspiration and the original seven 12ers buddy Drew Johnson from http://www.48by48.com/about and most recently http://www.hereayear.com/
He is making a pitstop of sorts in DeForest tomorrow on his way to Minnesota for a short stay in his hometown. We are fortunate to have him join a few 12ers on a project in town. Pictures will follow to be sure.

You can also follow Drew on facebook http://www.facebook.com/hereayear

Summer of 12 kids - we would like to round up as many of us as we can to take a picture in front of the Volunteer Hours Tally Board on the Corner of Main and Holum Streets tomorrow at 9AM. A few quick pictures and you can get on with the day's plans. The newspaper would like a copy of the picture for the paper. :-)
Let me know if you can make it.

Stacey and I are proud to report that with 6 weeks down and 6 weeks still to go, the Summer of 12 kids have logged a total of 233 hours of community volunteering so far. How extremely proud we are of the families that have contributed to Summer of 12 this year. I hope that this is only the beginning of a lifetime of service to others no matter where your life takes you!
